Someone’s once old water tank will soon begin a new life as a container pond on the allotment. #Gardening #Recycling #Allotment #Pond
Adding a pond to a garden is the single most valuable thing we can do for our wildlife.

@Broadfork Right, okay, I'll do it. Have avoided because of GHG emissions
@TheDonsieLass GHG of the pond containers/liners? Puddling clay is an alternative as are having seasonal ponds which will offer different but also important habitat to a permanent pond.
@Broadfork Thanks. I was looking at puddling clay but as with most (all?) of my garden projects, the technical aspects of installation will probably best me!
The mechanisms of the emissions are not well-understood at this stage and there are only one or two studies exploring this but here's some evidence that small artificial urban ponds could contribute meaningful GHG emissions and I had dared not risk it:

@Broadfork On the subject of the Biological Recording Company
@rooftopjaxx Thanks for the heads up. Shame this information will be behind a paywall though.
@Broadfork You will spend hours watching the damselflies dancing! Enjoy!
@Hesperalis I do hope so. I’m excited, I’ve never been allowed to have a pond on a plot before. This site is chalk and cheese from the old one.
I’ll be asking my near neighbour here for advice and pond plants.
I’m thinking of adding different habitat around it also maybe a paver or two, some sand, soil, stone, wood and plants for different insects to use.
@Broadfork @Hesperalis Keep on having fun in the allotment. The pond life will be fun to learn about.
@Broadfork Sounds like a much happier place where you are now. I'm so grateful that my council is fairly hands off. No fires allowed but as long as you are working your plot in some form they leave us to it. Different habitats sound great. I wish I had space for a beetle bank.
@Hesperalis I flit back and forth between the two but the new one is where I like to spend my time. I am much happier there already and the people have been very welcoming.
I’ll look to add little areas of different habitat into the plot where I can.
@Broadfork Well two plots and your home set up will keep you out of mischief
@Hesperalis I’m just about keeping all the plates spinning! Luckily the clocks change next weekend so we get that all important extra hour of daylight.
I couldn’t do this without no dig taking on much of the workload. I still don’t get to spend much time in the garden unfortunately so it mostly has to look after itself.
