We're about to go though a narrow, low-roofed foot-tunnel from the park at Aarhus University, Denmark, to the main ring road a level above. We're surrounded by beautifully laid yellow-brick patterns characteristic of the university's architectural style (built 1931). The walls, the ground, the roof that arches above our heads - the way their linear brick lines and patterns curve and stretch ahead give a sensation of movement. Beyond: a row of low curving steps lead out through the arched exit. At the top, framed by the arch, a sliver of bright daylight from the street above. On either side of the steps, a smooth ramp of brickwork. So lovely that they just look like aesthetically pleasing edges but are in fact for wheeling your bike up and down the stairs.
