Recently a couple of people expressed interest in volunteering at mastodon.green ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

The vision for mastodon.green is to be a server that removes CO2 from the atmosphere. To be a server that goes beyond net-zero.

-it's also to be a server where you can post almost anything you want, no matter if you are interested in climate or not.

You can do your normal social stuff and the server removes a bit of CO2 while you're on it.

Reply or send me a message if you are curios about volunteering.

@JohanEmpa How should this work? And what about the CO2 emissions from the production of the server and the network infrastructure? ๐Ÿค”

#greenFediverse

@aligyie
1. We need to estimate, and then calculate, our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions

2. Then create an income stream that covers the cost of removing those emissions + removing a bit more + the cost of the servers of course

3. We're going for long term removals so that we're CO2e negative or with another word climate-positive. (Carbfix.com or Biochar for example)

4. Physically removing the CO2 is done by companies such as Climeworks.com or via the Puro.earth platform.

@JohanEmpa
sounds like a cool project!
I would be highly interested in the outcome of step 1 and the assumptions made during the calculation process.

Re #Introduction
Hello,
Welcome to the Fedi, and Mastodon in particular!

I'm interested in how your server removes CO2. I teach about #biodiversity online and am attempting to grow a garden here in the Mojave Desert of the southwest U.S.(colonized territories ๐Ÿ˜ฅ)
I dream of getting out to the Ecosystem Restoration Camps and just living that way till my dying day.
I was introduced to the Fediverse by my friends, and heroes, at Democracy Town.

My bio pretty much covers the rest.

@JohanEmpa If you are still looking for a way to remove CO2: Growing algae with the server heat is done sometimes. Spirulina perhaps? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@JohanEmpa So you are suggesting something like Ecosia.org but as a social network instead of a search engine? Interesting! What would be your business model? Would you want to sell ad-sapce? Maybe I'm a bit too narrow minded, but that's the only way I can think of right now to monetize this.

@troethe
Personally I quite like my social timeline to be ad-free. How about you?

'monetizing' ? ๐Ÿคฎ ๐Ÿ˜‘

Please don't take the brief puking personal, it's just that word, it,๐Ÿคฎ.๐Ÿ˜‘. I understand what you mean.

I have some ideas on how to cover the costs in a fair way. ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ™‚

It's not advertising, it's not VC and it's not selling data.

@JohanEmpa I apsolutely agree, I also would prefer not to have ads in my timeline. It was just the first thing that came to my mind, because of the relative success ecosia had with this model.
Can't wait to hear more about your ideas though!
Hmu if there is anything small I can help with in regards to server admin stuff. Have some unprofessional experience there. Although sadly not too much time right now :(

@JohanEmpa
Hi. I run GreenMaps.US.
I am interested in a server to host multiple Green Party US unofficial accounts, maybe along with their RSS or Twitter feeds.

@UncensoredNews
No, sorry, you can't do that on this server.

* Official accounts only.
* We're a European server mainly for people and organizations in EU/EEA

May I suggest that you self host a Mastodon server.

@JohanEmpa

A great suggestion. Sadly I am doing too many things Really GP US should host a server. Not going to happen.

@JohanEmpa Could you use / adapt some of the ideas which the German email service Posteo is using? I really like the idea of sustainable and climate-friendly social media. I doubt I would be of much help as a volunteer because I am not knowledgeable about computers, but I hope very much that you can achieve your vision. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒ

@mrsmhere
Thanks ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I will look into that.

Many things are just as important as the technical part of this project. For example finding contradictory or unclear parts in our public texts and guidelines.

@JohanEmpa When I have learned my way around Mastodon better, I will willingly volunteer.
