A beautiful assemblage of lichens on the base of the cross which stands on the pool of the Holy Well at Holystone, Northumberland. This has been a site of religious significance for centuries, maybe on account of the spring water coming from the local sandstone, noted for it's purity. More info in alt text.

Base of a stone cross in the pool of a well, covered in coloured lichen and with an inscription which reads "IN THIS PLACE PAVLINUS THE BISHOP BAPTIZED THREE THOUSAND NORTHVMBRIANS - EASTER DCXXVII"" He didn't of course, they got the place wrong. He baptised 3000 at York (St Petri) rather than Holystone (St Petra"). A simple translation error from St Bede's writing.
