When you plant seeds in the garden, you don’t dig them up every day to see if they have sprouted yet. You simply water them and clear away the weeds; you know that the seeds will grow in time. Similarly, just do your daily practice and cultivate a kind heart.

We will develop and cultivate the liberation of mind by lovingkindness, make it our vehicle, make it our basis, stabilize it, exercise ourselves in it, and fully perfect it.

That's why you write technical documents in English.

#plant #identification today is the Whitebeam tree which is one of my favourites. It has beautiful whispers of flowers and leaves that are paler on the underside. The top of the leaves are a pale sage colour. It has beautiful red berries in the autumn which can be on the dry side so less attractive to birds however it can be used to make jelly.

Late in the day but todays #plant #identification is the Scarlet Pimpernel. The character in the novel was named after the plant. It’s a creeping plant so appears to move from year to year. The flower is tiny and closes up when there is no sun so it is hard to find. It’s pollinators are flies but it is also self pollinating. Feeding of the plant by various animals, such as horses and dogs, caused a gastroenteritis. High doses can prove fatal. The herb is toxic to poultry and rabbits, and the seed to birds. It is said that experimental doses of the liquid in humans can cause intense nausea, headache and bodily pain. Skin contact with the leaf can cause an allergic reaction.

#florespondence alkanet.
Green alkanet is a member of the forget-me-not family, Boraginaceae, and is related to borage and comfrey. Hairy stems to 80cm (32in), leaves broadly ovate and noticeably bristly. Bright blue forget-me-not type flowers with white centre, 8-10mm (½in), open from pink buds and are borne April to June. @plants

I really wish Mastodon had an edit button. I've posted that sentence so many times on Twitter but I'm surprised it doesn't exist here. The likes of Facebook handle this perfectly by allowing edits and also providing a little edit history link so you can still see previous versions if required.

A fantastic step forward for Jake Daniels to come out as gay. It's shocking that he's the first active professional football player to do so since Justin Fashanu 32 years ago! It's so sad that it still has to be such a momentous thing. Hopefully the likes of Daniel will aid the normalisation process in sport and it will no longer require such immense courage. The very best of luck to him.

We've just had a little visitor to our bird feeders. A lesser spotted woodpecker. Excuse the blurry photos as I'm some distance away.

Skipped gardening today, instead went for a little walk to a nearby gully with the kids. Saw more toothwort (Lathrae squamaria) there than I've ever seen before, the whole slope was full of it!

It's such a strange plant - it's parasitic on the roots of hazel, so it doesn't have to produce its own chlorophyll, and therefore looks almost translucent. @plants
