”Even if there’s a nuclear war, or almost any imaginable natural disaster, the earth would still be the best location for mankind to live. Going to Mars is crazy.”

You just hate Elon Musk, correct?
Would you oppose the idea of humankind sending humans to Mars in the same way (as you apparently do now) if it wasn't Elon Musk but the ESA/NASA doing/planning it, sanctioned by a broad approval by the population/voters?
@essollteskalieren Wait a minute!
Are you implying I am quoting a leading scientist because I have an agenda?
Look at the pot calling the kettle black.
No. I obviously wouldn’t you silly pup. Because I obviously quoted her for the reason that I know, it is in fact stupid.
Robotic exploration is the way to go until reliable fusion power and nuclear spacecraft, providing for reasonable ways of escape.
Yes, I was implying this.
Okay, maybe you just coincidently hate Musk, also possible.
Quite effective to rest your point on some professor's statement, isn't it?
The fact that she apparently dismisses the idea alltogether makes her appear not too wise in my eyes.
The very simple premise of the invaluable utility of bringing the most valuable thing in existence (life) to another planet and establishing an ideally autarkic outpost there shouldn't be so hard to understand.
@essollteskalieren It is hard to understand, as any human crew would be subject to being slowly fried by radiation anytime they work or travel.
But is the case you are making, that her problem is that she doesn’t ”understand” this point you and Elon Musk are making, that there is such a high inherent value of having human life on other planets that all other considerations are moot?
Don’t you think you sound a little cultish there belittling people who don’t agree?
As to radiation .. I assume there are at least partial technical solutions (shielding) to this issue.
No, Mars doesn't have an atmosphere like Earth. But neither does the ISS or the Moon and Astronauts do spend time there.
---
As to me belittling people .. was not my intention. Sorry if it felt this way.
I just don't understand how she/you can just dismiss the notion of humans bringing life/humans to Mars so easily.
As to the professor apparently not understanding. I'd draw this parallel to data reliability:
Who would operate an important system or store important data without _any_ kind of data backup?
As soon as you have a backup, no matter how simple/incomplete it'd be a potential game changer, since a 100 % loss event has become much less likely.
The effort might be huge, but the value is IMO also huge.
Consider running a computer only with RAM, no HDD. Working on it to earn your living.
Now adding a HDD and saving files to disk would be the first thing I would do. High inherent value indeed.
@gimulnautti therfore I am big supporter of Musked Felon going to Mars!
