In general we grossly underutilize the tools we have and digital tech is no exception. But one magic window that is still closed is for a dispersed group to be able to sing / play #music over the #network
For that to happen #latency must drop below perceptible levels that prohibit synchrony.
The effect will be a bit like the moving image illusion once frames per second exceed a certain level
António Guterres on the climate crisis: ‘We are coming to a point of no return’
A recent analysis showed the G7 countries – the #UK, #US, #Canada, #Italy, #France, #Germany and #Japan – have committed $189bn to support #oil, #coal and #gas, as well as offer financial lifelines to the aviation and automotive sectors, since the outbreak of the #coronavirus. This is over $40bn more than has been directed towards renewable energy.
In the meantime carbon dioxide in the air is the highest since measurements began
Maybe it will all be ok in the end, maybe it will be pretty far from ok
Playing with small but existential risk probabilities is always fun
FediFollows has been on the #Fediverse for one year! 🎉 🎂
A huge thank you to everyone who suggested accounts so far, and to the accounts themselves 👏
Hand-curated directories are often seen as old-fashioned, but I think they have a role in getting people started on new decentralised social media.
FediFollows currently has 2.3K followers across a wide range of instances, so even people who don't follow me are more likely to see these interesting accounts in their hashtag searches.
A self-organised group with "invited additional experts" in January this year "created a review of the ecosystem around protocols for social media".

The failure of #cryptocurrency to solve any real economic problem is not particularly surprising. People have trying for ages so called alternative or complementary currencies to alleviate financial exclusion and other distortions that starve communities of purchasing power. While some projects managed to keep going, there is no overwhelming success to report / learn from. Other elements (legal framework, credit systems etc) are impossible to separate.
While I had hoped there'd be more people on the fediverse who are/were in bands or do independent music production and have videos for their projects I didn't get much response. Unfortunately only a couple people sent anything.
If anyone has ideas on where I can get in touch w/ indie musicians who want to share their videos please let me know as I'd love to keep this project idea up and have an outlet for musicians.

"Delightful" list of lists of free software etc. https://codeberg.org/teaserbot-labs/delightful.git
Tech as the non-bottleneck. #wikipedia has changed the world (continues doing so with #wikidata) and is written in #php, the "fractal of bad design". Same with dozens of important #opensource early web frameworks, from #wordpress, to #moodle and #nextcloud.
Alas same with the archvillain #facebook.
In English business writing (and hence thinking) the term "consumer" is so pervasive as a proxy for the mass of humanity it leaves little room to hope a #sustainability transition is a real possibility
Finding a catchy larguage term to describe the economic role of people as something more than mindless automatons attached to the consumption trough would be a good step forward
Any blessed wordsmiths out there?

The fascination with spectacular volcanic eruptions has a dark side. Volcanoes are "known unknown" but ignored global risks like pandemics. A large volcanic eruption may destroy the global food supply chain for several years. There is no indication the collective response will be any better than the covid fiasco
