It's a sad to see so many #Mastodon accounts left unused, after the big surge of last year. My feed has turned stale, and sometimes it feels people are talking to themselves (in all its weird, quirky or downright #mentalhealth hell). And that is before you see those #crossposting from Birdsite without ever coming on #fediverse. The one lively community is my #climatescience list & I am grateful. Please send recommendations of other accounts to follow: #investigativejournalism #socialjustice
@JMad17 It had started well though, I was getting really high, really interesting #engagement. Now I have to weed through the people I follow and start cleaning. I refuse to go to #bluesky: sold me once, will sell me twice (#jack).
@sheislaurence Maybe you can browse the posts from @FediFollows and see if you find something interesting?
@JohanEmpa @FediFollows good advice, will do!
@JohanEmpa @FediFollows Interestingly, quite a few still listed in the https://fedi.directory/ are also abandoned after the surge (usually stopping in March), so clearly it is a phenomenon affecting everyone.
@sheislaurence Some people try stuff, are enthusiastic for a while and the try something else. At least we're still here
Mastodon isn't constantly saying "are you interested in this person" or "is this your friend". One has to browse timelines, and find people through replies on friends' posts. It's not that easy to find people
There are attempts of creating opt-in directories here's one

This is quite a normal pattern on here, each surge raises the baseline. It's sort of like the way the tide rises in waves on coastlines, each wave seems to go out but it comes back in a bit higher each time until the shore is covered.
The number of people using this place regularly has gone up with each wave since it began.
You don't have to wait for me to post something interesting, I have a website at https://fedi.directory
Also, here's a summary of all the ways to discover interesting accounts on here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends/
@sheislaurence take heart. It will take some experimenting. Also, a more low key social media environment is not bad, at least from where I am standing.
@sheislaurence
Some of my accounts get more use than others but they all get some use now and again at least. My Furry.energy account gets the least use. This one I am replying to you with the most.
