Dear @feditips dear instance admin @JohanEmpa, dear explainers of the #fediverse, can someone explain to me how the #explore section is made up? I don't assume it's handcrafted by #instanceadmins clicking buttons all day long, but there's a shared #algorithm? Is it based on #popularity, based on what, number of any #interactions? #clicks? #comments? How often is it refreshed? Looks like daily to me on mastodon.green. Please share code!
@sheislaurence My understanding was that it was by the number of boosts and favourites. Outside of that I'm a little hazy (but then I'm not an authority. Just a user).
The posts section is based on how many times a post has been shared recently.
The hashtags is based on how often a tag has been used recently.
News is how often a link has been shared recently.
"For You" is often just the choices of your instance's admin.
@sheislaurence Here's a screenshot of our settings (from the admin panel). Moderators can remove stuff from the explore section if needed. I don't think we had any problematic content there yet.
You can probably find the code by searching in Mastodon's Github repository.
