@dameoutlaw@mstdn.social @lacouvee @benbel@mastodon.social my impression is that it wasn’t exactly thought through, but i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. If there’s any suggestion that the tech is somehow more powerful than we currently understand, that is really beyond the point: the strength of a #socialmedia platform is not in its tech but its #community, which is why TW & FB remains so critical, the sheer strength in numbers. Compare 1.4M active users #Mastodon, 238M X, 2.98 BILLION #Facebook!
@sheislaurence @dameoutlaw @benbel that's a good point. I miss the community of early day bird app - I met my now husband because of it, and Social Media Camp, as well as hundreds of people. Changed my life, connected me to a theatre community worldwide, allowed me to become an arts reviewer. The real-time reach was phenomenal.
@lacouvee @dameoutlaw@mstdn.social @benbel@mastodon.social incredible that's how you met your husband! There was definitely an excitement when TW was heading in the direction of a #newswire, a wild optimism in the power of collective action, co-learning. #Mastodon feels more like a resignation space, a belief that society is atomised & that you are better off in your own protected micro-community. My impression anyway.
@sheislaurence @dameoutlaw @benbel yes - excitement, there was definitely that. We met more people over a 2 year period than at any other time than college. Raised thousands of dollars for charity - before GoFundMe and other platforms were even a thing.
