#BikeNite Follow-up
So last evening at least two posters expressed concerns about mountain biking's exploitation or destruction of environmentally sensitive places. Is that a well held perception among those who don't mountain bike? It is interesting because I recently voted in favor of the installation of a mountain bike track in an overgrown and underutilized park. The NIMBY neighbors objected on environmental grounds, but the proponents had an environmental study, and mitigated the ... 1/2

A2: Yes. Last week.
I went for some laps in local park with some other parents from school (we are training for a charity ride - link pinned on my profile if you want to give).

I was following someone and hear a weird noise. I thought: is someone using an ebike? Then I realised that the quick release lever for my front wheel (usually pointing up) had moved. It had come loose and was coming of with vibration.

Skewed it back on and all good now

A5. Where to begin? As I'm late to the party this week, I'll just assume that the other 20 or so replies have covered everything. I do have a soft spot for the demos where cyclists make a lightweight frame that takes up the same space as a car, just to make things obvious.

A2. Oh yes! When I was about 14 or 15 I used to do deliveries for a local pharmacy on my bike, which had a new-fangled quick release axle on the front wheel. The shop was at the bottom of a hill. I usually coasted down the hill and then did that little manoeuvre of lifting up on the bars to jump the kerb. One day, I lifted up the bars and the front wheel fell out. Luckily the pharmacist was able to patch up my cuts and scrapes. Not much damage.

A1. Posting from home in Rome after two weeks away.

I’m glad people enjoy the #30daysofbiking project and see some of their posts here, but the truth is that I could never manage such a thing as I just cannot find time to cycle every single day. It would be different if I cycled to work or something like that, but for now, I salute all those who do it.

Like a few folks in this thread I had a crank fall off!

I was doing my cross-country ride in May 2023 and was on the outskirts of Columbus when my left crank just … fell off

no warning — it wasn’t loose or wiggling or anything

turns out a tiny pin inside had lost a crucial, millimeter-sized tooth

Here’s the broken one (bottom) next to the replacement (top)

Maybe you can spot the difference

Been using a bike computer since mid 2012. Pretty much all my rides have been recorded since then. Automatic upload to Ride with GPS. No effort at all.

I was recently inspired by @matthewconroy to
vide code a python script to work out my Eddington number and a few other stats. github.com/alxtrnr/eddington_n

Bit of an outlier given previous replies. Never occurred to me I might not be normal 😜

A5. As someone who ONLY RECENTLY got back to bicycling after decades. (was bicycling before I was driving, but then life got in the way, and traffic got very bad, and then finally they put some bike lanes here and I decided to quit burning as much gas):

1. BICYCLING IS FASTER IN TOWN THAT DRIVING A CAR!! (in many cases, especially in traffic, and especially to/from school!)

2. LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE TURNING RIGHT AT A STOP LIGHT! So many car drivers don't even look to the right for pedestrians or bicyclists and just look left and cut hard onto the road they're going...

3. YOUR EV IS NOT MORE ECO FRIENDLY THAN PEDALING. I see so many people within bicycle range of stores driving 2000 lbs of batteries and plastic to the store for a stick of butter or whatnot. It just alleviates their guilt, without actually fixing the problem.

4. THE FIELD OF VIEW in cars is very bad. Some cars, VERY VERY BAD. Your field of view in a bicycle is VERY GOOD. I really prefer the bicycle.

5. If you bicycle a lot, riding a car is frustrating... particularly in traffic which is moving slower than you could bicycle (or walk!). It's like you're trapped in the car. On a bicycle, you're not trapped. You can get off. You can take a break. You can go to a nearby store without fighting for parking. You forget that when you are a driver.
