TIL: an exhausted #cmos #battery can cause #Linux to behave strangely after a hard #shutdown (caused by a #UPS being incorrectly turned off) - it uses the BIOS time to check the filesystem block timestamps, and as it had gone back to 2012 the OS thinks the filesystem time is in the future! (At least the hard drive on this server isn't on the way out yet which is what I had feared, but this required an emergency visit to the office as it is the main #VOIP #PBX) #sysadmin

Geeky project of the day: I needed a remote controller for an audio player to assist me with editing my research interviews, so I repurposed one of my midi controllers for the task. It's really nice to use a rotary controller to scrub through an interview audio file. Even acceleration works!

It's a simple #bash script, using #cmos, #tmux, and aseqdump.

I needed a simple code lock for this years #jotajoti #scout event - won’t reveal why just yet 🙂

Everything these days revolves around microcontrollers and sure, easy to do, however I needed simplicity and 9V battery power, outside at potentially freezing temperatures and it also needs to be low cost, I plan to use at least three of them..

Came across this simple circuit, almost too simple to be true, but it does the job just fine: push the four buttons in the right order and the output is enabled. Bingo 😃

Not overly secure but for my purposes, it’s a perfect little vintage code lock 🔐👌🏼☺️
