‘Don’t call it zombie deer disease’: scientists warn of ‘global crisis’ as infections spread across the US

The contagious, fatal illness in deer, elk and moose must be taken seriously, say experts as it takes hold in the US and reaches other countries. While it has not infected humans yet, the risk is growing.

Chronic Wasting Disease.
“This has been a slowly expanding epidemic with a growth curve playing out on a decades scale, but now we’re seeing the deepening consequences and they could be severe,” Roffe says. “Unfortunately, what’s happening with this disease was predictable and we’re living with the consequences of some decisions that were rooted in denial.”

Texas Lawmaker Who Breeds Deer Wants to Abolish Texas Parks and Wildlife Agency That Regulates Him

In one of the more brazen acts of the 2025 Texas legislative session, a lawmaker who breeds high-fence deer has introduced a law to abolish the state fish-and-game agency that also helps regulate the breeding of high-fence deer.

Prediction: As the mis-folded protein (prion) contamination spreads, it is inevitable that it will contaminate lands used to graze Bison, Cows, Sheep, Goats, Pigs and Boar.

In time (not all that much time) all of these will cease being foodstuffs in the United States.

In decades ahead this implies that Beef, Lamb, Pork and Goat, along with Bison, Deer, Elk, and other cervids will cease being food in North America, and Scandinavia.

Let that sink in.

Extent of Chronic Waisting disease updated to February 10, 2025 in North America.

Save the data & graphics before they disappear.

CWD is now in 35 States, 4 Canadian Provinces, Norway, Sweden and Finland. And in captive cervids in most of those, plus Quebec and South Korea.

The major transmission route is fecal-oral. I.e. fecal contaminated land. And once contaminated the land can transmit the disease for 1,000+ years.

I get that folks love hunting but frankly, I wouldn't eat deer or elk anymore at all. That's just me. Prions are frightening. It's not known what the risk to humans is with this but prion diseases have extremely long incubation periods. So you might think there's no problem...when there is.

"Researchers have identified chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions in raw, cooked, and cured meat from an infected elk in Texas, confirming the presence of the infectious CWD-causing agents in muscle but concluding that the risk of transmission to humans through consumption is still unclear and requires continued vigilance.

Cooking temperatures are well known to be ineffective in disabling CWD prions, which are misfolded cervid (eg, deer, moose, elk) prions, leading to neurologic disease and death. The prions spread among cervids and through environmental contamination. There is no vaccine or treatment for CWD, which has been found in 35 US states, Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and South Korea."

Chronic Wasting Disease Spillover: Preparing for 'the day after'

"While no human CWD cases have been identified, increasing disease prevalence in cervids boosts the odds of spillover into people, other wildlife, and livestock. "Emerging prion strains with a greater propensity for cross-species transmission could heighten these concerns," the report said. "In addition to human health risks, CWD spillover could have far-reaching effects on the food supply, economy, global trade, and agriculture."

"Since we began working on this report in 2023, concerns about a CWD prion spillover from cervids to other animal species and humans have only continued to grow in importance, and we're simply not prepared should a species jump occur," said Michael T. Osterholm, PhD, MPH, CIDRAP director. #CWD #prions #zoonosis #health cidrap.umn.edu/chronic-wasting

Our study indicates that neuroinvasion of Norwegian moose prions can occur without, or only very limited, replication in the spleen, an unprecedented finding for CWD.

journals.plos.orgNorwegian moose CWD induces clinical disease and neuroinvasion in gene-targeted mice expressing cervid S138N prion proteinAuthor summary Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease of cervids that is expanding its global footprint. The pathogenesis of prion disease is driven by the accumulation of PrPSc, a misfolded isoform of the cellular prion protein (PrPC). CWD prion strains from North America are lymphotropic, while Norwegian moose and red deer prions are not, and therefore considered non-contagious, sporadic CWD forms. We studied the propagation of Norwegian CWD prions in gene-targeted mice carrying cervid PrPC variants. We reveal that the Norwegian moose isolate induces clinical disease in mice expressing a PrPC variant previously shown to only display subclinical infection upon challenge with North American CWD. We report the first instance of red deer CWD transmission exclusively to mice overexpressing elk PrPC. Notably, our findings suggest a neuroinvasion route for Norwegian moose CWD prions that potentially bypasses spleen replication, underscoring the complexity of prion disease transmission, and the need for continued research into the behavior of prions across different species and protein variants.

<💬>
Clusters of sporadic CJD cases may occur in regions with CWD-confirmed deer populations, hinting at potential cross-species prion transmission. Surveillance and further research are essential to better understand this possible association.

Yes, the prions can get on and into plants and remain a problem, but it's not clear if the prions can get into flowers, pollen, fruits, roots, tubers. I'm not that worried, yet. cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S25
