No, that was another law of academic life: it is impossible to be excessive in flattery of one’s peers.”</p><p>— <a href="https://beige.party/tags/DavidLodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DavidLodge</span></a></p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/quote" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>quote</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/academic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>academic</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/flattery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>flattery</span></a></p>
alice 🪞♥️ 🎩🐇<p>I'm dedicating the 3rd volume of my novel "Marianne" - now almost complete editing and ready to publish - to the memory of <a href="https://beige.party/tags/DavidLodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DavidLodge</span></a>.</p>
Edward Champion<p>David Lodge -- whom I sadly never got the opportunity to interview or meet -- has passed. I ADORED his hilarious novels -- especially the Campus Trilogy. (One of his great jokes is the game of Humiliation in CHANGING PLACES.) There was a warmth and an empathy behind his often razor-sharp wit. I honestly found his academic satires more enjoyable than Kingsley Amis. This guy was SO underrated. RIP Mr. Lodge, and thanks.</p><p><a href="https://www.lemonde.fr/en/obituaries/article/2025/01/06/david-lodge-british-writer-and-master-of-the-sarcastic-academic-novel-has-died_6736738_15.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">lemonde.fr/en/obituaries/artic</span><span class="invisible">le/2025/01/06/david-lodge-british-writer-and-master-of-the-sarcastic-academic-novel-has-died_6736738_15.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/davidlodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>davidlodge</span></a></p>
Alley Stoughton<p>My favorite author has now died. I recommend all his novels, which are mostly comedies that treat their characters well.</p><p>If you want to start, read his Campus Trilogy:</p><p>Changing Places<br>Small World<br>Nice Work</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/RIPDavidLodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RIPDavidLodge</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/DavidLodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DavidLodge</span></a></p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GiftLink" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GiftLink</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/03/books/david-lodge-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.m04.b0FV.eFRsMY9LsjkP&amp;smid=url-share" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/01/03/books/d</span><span class="invisible">avid-lodge-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.m04.b0FV.eFRsMY9LsjkP&amp;smid=url-share</span></a></p>
Michael Meckler<p>David Lodge's 'Campus Trilogy' was a hilarious send-up of academic life in the humanities in the final third of the 20th c: a world of visiting faculty, jet-setting conferences, and self-important theorising. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/DavidLodge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DavidLodge</span></a></p><p><a href="https://bbc.com/news/articles/cx2nzgp5yp0o" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">bbc.com/news/articles/cx2nzgp5</span><span class="invisible">yp0o</span></a></p>

Flipboard Culture Desk<p>David Lodge, the British novelist who was best known for his satirical books, has died at age 89. He was nominated for the Booker Prize for his campus novels "Small World" and "Nice Work," and was described by the Times of London as "probably the most distinguished novelist of his generation not to win [the Booker]."
