Recently a friend of mine got a new #Windows PC for running #Cubase on it. He installed his previously used software, namely Cubase and #Voxengo audio plugins on the new box.

When he opened a Cubase project he had copied from his old PC, none of the plugins in that project were detected any more. Even though he had them installed. So he had to open the project on the old machine, write all plugin settings down to paper, re-insert the very same plugins on the new machine into the very same project and restore the settings from his notes.

I just copied an #Ardour project from #OSX to #UbuntuStudio #Linux. I use some Windows #Voxengo plugins on Linux via #LinVST, while I use native Voxengo binaries on OS X.

The Ardour project created on OS X plays on Linux out of the box, using all plugins (given they are installed).

Just one of these many details in how your #DAW does certain things.

Mobiles Mini-#Tonstudio.

I'm unhappy to report this, but #Harrison #Mixbus today has let me down. Or, to be honest: I was also slightly under-prepared for the #recording session. I had entered my Mixbus 10 Pro license key and it had swallowed it. But then when I loaded the backing tracks into it, it played this random demo mode noise. Okay, things may happen, but since the producer/songwriter and her double bass player were ready to rumble, I didn't have any time to get this fixed.

So what to do? Obviously: Start up #Ardour and get the recording done.

Ardour as a #DAW on an old #MacBook 2017 running #Monterey still, with an #RME #Fireface400 via a stupid adapter chain to Thunderbolt3… what can you say about it? Well, I can say: We had a 5hr recording session without any hickups – technically counting 30 takes.

Why #OSX anyways? Only one reason: #Totalmix instead of #ffadomixer. I do all mixing on #Linux with Mixbus. But for this I'll just pass on stems to the studio which happens to be located in some other country.

#Apple Needs a #SnowSequoia
Same year iPhone launched, Apple unveiled a massive upgrade to #Mac #OSX known as Leopard, sporting “300 New Features.” Two years later, it did something almost unheard of: it released #SnowLeopard, an upgrade all about how little it added and how much it took away.
Snow Leopard did what it was made to do. It was one of the most solid software releases ever put out. One of the best modern #OS releases, period.
Apple needs to make it snow again.

Obwohl Maus dpi 1000 hat 🤔 Don't get it. After many, many years with #Apple & #OSX as the "go to" computer to use for development, I am stepping away, and it is not even because of "Apple being evil". I will most likely only return if current or future workplace gives the option "it is either Windows or OSX".

OSX feels more and more like it is getting in the way of stuff, in that sense, it is becoming more like Windows. I still stumble on the lack of ports over to the M* processors, though this is getting less of an issue. Having a workspace "tailored" the way I want it, seems to be getting harder.

On the other side, Linux has gained so much traction, and you are not "on your own".

Switching to OSX for dev was a freeing experience when it happened, a good OS with a unix core, proper terminal. Now "ecosystem lockin" is the only thing that seem to matter.

The importance of tailoring my linux UI experience cannot be understated. From keyboard driven WM, to "ease of use UI", anyone can be at home.

Now, even simplicity is a reason to pick #linux
