More than 100,000 African #seeds put in #Svalbard Global #SeedVault for safekeeping
Seeds of 177 species from across #Africa to be stored in Norway to preserve #crop diversity in case of disaster.
Among the latest additions are seeds critical to building #climate resilience, such as the tree Faidherbia albida, which turns nitrogen into ammonia and nitrates, and Cordia africana, the Sudan teak, a tree renowned for its strength and durability.

"Our desire to preserve is strongly linked to a narrative of loss, both for #biodiversity writ large and for rare heirloom #seeds. But we recognize the need for biodiversity and destroy it in the same breath. What if we protected the Amazon instead of just the genetics within it? What if we supported small-scale diversified agriculture instead of industrialized monoculture?"

The first round of seeds for my container garden have all germinated! It’s the first year I’m using heirloom seeds I saved from a previous crop. I’ve got basil, white cherry and Brandywine tomatoes, and Jimmy Nardello and Bulgarian carrot peppers

We have germination! Tomato, cucumber, and hot peppers. Not pictured: sugar snaps, nasturtiums, cosmos and nicotiana.
I sowed a few seeds in pots on the windowsill this afternoon so what's the first thing I'll be doing when I get up tomorrow morning despite knowing that germination will take at least a week or more.
Seeds are so weird! I put these fresh collected seeds into a bag together in July 2024. They've spent almost ten months doing absolutely nothing through all my experiments - light, dark, warm, cool... And now suddenly they're all sprouting at once, it's like magic.
Ah, so Just Seed are one of those examples of something that comes up on Evilzon a lot but in fact you're actually better off going direct to their own website. (Note I speak from being in the UK here!)
I use Just Seed because they're the only place I've managed to source a "correct" form of Japanese green shiso (perilla) from. Everywhere else has the less-frilly large leaved Korean variety. Shiso seeds have a short viability so our 2 year old packet seems to be kaput, so time for some new ones (and we should remember to gather our own seed, much like with parsley our best shiso crops have been once that self-seeded, unlike the parsley unfortunately that hasn't sustained itself year on year... not sure why.)
@RebekahWSD maybe #seeds ?
MishloachManotGardening might be a little too niche (but I actually like the idea :)
