We had unseasonably warm weather here in Forest of Dean (FoD) last week and it's nice and mild today. It rained last night properly for the first time in a while. Things are waking up and there's enough in the garden to keep us ticking over. The greenhouses are packed with salad greens, many self-seeded from last year. So we have salad greens just about every day. Seedlings are coming along well too.
The bees are quiet today but they had a great year and done well over the winter WITHOUT any help from chemicals or sugar feed. I don't treat them or feed them.
Last year they swarmed!
The willow hedge we put in for a windbreak did it's job over the winter, protecting the greenhouses.
This year, I'm back at it (after donating a kidney last year which knocked my growing schedule last year).
Last year was so awful for so many growers with the cold summer and record breaking rain and flooding. Here's hoping this year is a bit drier! #growyourownfood #goodfoodcomesfromthegarden #permaculture #nodig #bees #willow #seedsovereignty #saveseeds #growagarden #goodfoodisnotrocketscience #radicalgardening #resistbigagriculture #soilhealth

The City of Edmonton has declared today, March 21, as Save Soil Day. I was at City Hall for the presentation of the official proclamation, and to speak to the gathered group about our recent Senate report on soil health. Tomorrow, the Save Soil group hosts a free double-bill at Campus Saint-Jean theatre: first, the documentary film Common Ground, followed by a one-woman show by Dale Hamilton called She Won’t Come in From the Fields. #yeg #yegcc #Edmonton #SenateofCanada #ualberta #SoilHealth

#DuarteCA #CommunityGarden to be developed at #TzeitelParasCaracciPark

March 12, 2025

"Duarte residents will soon have a new space to grow fresh produce, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the outdoors. Last month, the Duarte City Council approved the development of the Duarte Community Garden at Tzeitel Paras-Caracci Park (2701 Royal Oaks Drive).

"'This project exemplifies our dedication to creating #sustainable, #accessible spaces for our residents,' said Mayor Cesar A. Garcia. 'This garden will not only enhance the beauty of our park but also provide a space where our community can come together, learn, and share in the joy of nature. I am excited to see this project grow and look forward to it becoming a vibrant part of our community.'

"The goal of the Duarte Community Garden is to increase #FoodSovereignty by creating garden plots for community members to grow healthy food, cultivate agricultural literacy with educational programs, gather community by creating a welcoming and accessible garden space, and perform ecosystem services by removing grass, installing a sustainable #DripIrrigation system, building a #NativeHabitatGarden, and collecting #compost.

"The garden will feature 20 plots and two #ADAAccessible raised beds, available for rent at $5 per month. Community members can plant edible (excluding smokable) plants and flowers for personal, noncommercial use. It will include a storage shed with garden tools, an irrigation system promoting sustainable practices, and ADA-accessible decomposed granite pathways.

"The garden will be run in partnership with Food Exploration and Discovery (#FoodEd), a nonprofit organization that collaborates with San Gabriel Valley communities to create edible education sites and provide programs on #ecosystem #stewardship, healthy living, #environmental innovation, and entrepreneurship.

"Food Ed’s educational model will support gardeners of all skill levels, providing supplies and plants for beginners while experienced gardeners can use their own resources. The garden will also offer picnic benches for community #gatherings and host educational programs on topics like #VegetableGardening, #composting, #DroughtTolerant landscaping, and #SoilHealth.

"As the lead on this grant project, Food Ed will be responsible for building the #DuarteCommunityGarden. This includes overseeing site construction, collecting infrastructure bids, contractor management, program management, community engagement and workshops/events, processing plot holder applications, plant and soil replenishment, above ground irrigation repairs, developing the garden’s webpage and branding and overall garden management through October of 2026.

"For more information on the Duarte Community Garden, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (626) 357-7931."

Celebrating Two Years of Carbon Sequestration!

In just two years, Sierra Preta has produced 40m³ of of Biochar, durably sequestering 11.2 tons of CO₂ outside of our atmospheric cycle, and the current burning season is still going 🙌

Biochar production locks carbon into the soil for hundreds to thousands of years, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change.

🌿 Enhance soil water retention with Biochar! 🌱💧

Biochar's porous structure holds moisture, reduces evaporation & keeps the land fertile. In regions facing drought Biochar enhances the soil’s ability to support plant life, slowing down soil degradation & restoring our ecosystems.

Research shows Biochar can increase soil water retention by up to 50%, making it a vital tool in the fight against desertification.

The importance of reactive silica for maintaining soil health

#soil #soilhealth

link.springer.com/article/10.1

SpringerLinkThe importance of reactive silica for maintaining soil health - Plant and SoilBackground and aim Soil health is vital for the sustainability of ecosystem services such as food and fiber production, nutrient cycling and water supply. Soil health can be assessed through a combination of physical, biological and chemical metrics. There is emerging evidence that reactive silica is a strong factor controlling soil functions. Scope We explain how reactive silica, specifically dissolved silicic acid and amorphous silica, can be used as a new metric for assessing soil health, complementing traditional metrics or even substituting for them. Conclusion The pivotal role of reactive silica for soil health is particularly important under stress conditions that are typically associated with drought and soil degradation. The status of reactive silica indicates soil degradation earlier than the currently used metrics, because reactive silica depletion is followed by soil degradation. We recommend suitable methods and benchmarks for assessing reactive silica. Furthermore, we suggest further research to improve our understanding of the importance of reactive silica for soil health. We call upon the soil research community to include reactive silica as a metric for soil health assessment.

Senator Rob Black will be in Edmonton this week to deliver the annual Bentley Lecture in Sustainable Agriculture this Wednesday. Rob, who until prorogation chaired the Senate’s agriculture committee, was the guiding force behind our major study of soil health in Canada. He’ll be speaking (mostly) about our report. The lecture, at the Westin, is free and open to the public. Rob is a peach of a guy! Delighted to welcome him to #yeg. ualberta.ca/en/renewable-resou #ualberta #Edmonton #SoilHealth #cdnpoli

Test your soil's pH! Is it acidic or alkaline? Veggies like spinach & beans prefer neutral to alkaline soil, while blueberries & potatoes love acidic conditions. Knowing your soil's pH helps you understand what grows happily & which plants need some help to be at their best! #gardening #soilhealth
