#TacticalVoting

New paper out.

What happens when you make a model that includes realistic details about how people discuss ideas and decide how to act upon them? The answer is that with just 3 such elements of realism, one can mathematically explain the emergence of commonly observed situations, such as reaching a consensus and exchanging opinions, but also the separation of ideologies and the appearance of stable polarization. Not only this, but one can also account for phenomena such as peer pressure, cognitive dissonance, tactical voting and toxic idealism ( @benroyce I told you I was going to do it 😀 ) and prove how they affect the final state of the system.

I think you might be a bit harsh on the #green party - for them, widespread #tacticalvoting is likely to have significantly depressed their share of the popular vote - and the number of seats in which tactical voting helped them is a tiny fraction of the whole

Most parties don't accept actual members publicly advocating against their own candidate, & will expel members who do that

Grren remains a pressure group more than a party vying for power - their popular vote count matters

This election has indeed highlighted the urgent need for electoral reform. Switching from FPTP to a multi-member STV system would ensure that every vote counts and make tactical voting unnecessary. It's high time we move towards a fairer, more representative system that truly reflects the will of the people. Let's continue to push for Proportional Representation and make our voices heard. #ElectionLessons #MidBucksPrimary #TacticalVoting #VoteTogether #MidBuck buff.ly/3JPP44z

I've never liked #tacticalVoting. I particularly dislike how certain party activists castigate voters who won't vote tactically for their candidate ("you're electing #Trump!!!").

But recent elections in #UK, #India & #France, show how powerful it can be for opposition parties to team up against incumbents & the #right.

Strategy is important. But as with #climate activism, let's #lobby the parties, who have the power to have impact; judging everyday people is unhelpful.

More potential good Green news.

“And here are the latest Ipsos numbers.

Left-green New Popular Front: 171-187 seats

Macron’s allies: 152-163 seats

Far right National Front and allies: 134-152 seats.”

“Gabriel Attal, the prime minister and Macron ally, has said that he will offer his resignation.”

I've just signed this petition from the Electoral Reform Society to change the voting system in the UK to be fairer and more representative:

Yes, we had a chance at this with a referendum in 2011, but that just means it's time to bring this up again.

Especially in light of the rise of smaller parties, and some independent candidates, in the 2024 #GeneralElectionUK it's high time voters had a better guarantee of proper representation.

Interstingly the #TacticalVoting WWW sites do not take Bridgen into account.

RUL won't be splitting the CUP vote as much as it was when the polls were done, because they were before the Channel 4 News thing caused some movement away from RUL to the CUP.

Unless Bridgen splits the CUP vote significantly, RUL disaffection could actually get the CUP to win, as even just ½ of the RUL votes would be enough.
