The Critic
Directed by Anand Tucker, starring Ian McKellen, Gemma Arterton, Mark Strong; adapted by Patrick Marber
1934. An aging and feared theatre critic struggles to keep his job as the newspaper he works for comes under new management.
Nicely cast, elegantly produced and making good use of some social aspects of the period.
But, halfway through, the story takes a dark turn that is neither properly foreshadowed nor particularly engaging.
Rating: C-
