I know some members struggled to believe this could really be true earlier this week. But anyone who emailed a UCU staffer on strike earlier this week got an identikit out-of-office + the deleted advice page + this email sent to #UCU staff sadly confirms this really happened.

The Safe & Professional Workplace dispute must be resolved. I'm deeply concerned by the tone of multiple emails received from #UCU HQ about the dispute and urge members to look at @UniteUCU 's website too.

Let's compare this assertion to UCU's template (below).

This was a terrible choice which has:

- worsened industrial relations

- directly undermined every #UCU member & branch in dispute

- directly undermines UCU's own advice & organising tactics

- is likely to further embolden post-16 ed employers to use more aggressive tactics citing 'well you do it'

There was consternation when this kicked off 2 days ago that a 'management instruction' had been given to stop using a *routine tactic* we employ in branches. There's clearly a connected concern about disciplinary action for using a tactic #UCU itself advises us to use

I've seen an email essentially claiming by putting info about being on strike into an autoreply (a tactic UCU has routinely advised members to use) that the staff doing so have caused UCU to disclose personal sensitive data

Then this page was deleted: web.archive.org/web/2023021823

To be super clear, when the above quoted post from @UniteUCU went online two days ago, the page of advice to #UCU members about out of office autoreplies was still live. Now it is not.

Our union, in employer capacity, has gone into staff email accounts and manually altered autoreplies.

Solidarity with all striking workers.

As #UCU Edu Committee Chair I' was due to chair Cradle to Grave (our flagship education policy conference) on 29 March. It's sadly been cancelled by HQ citing @UniteUCU strike action in the preceding days.

The dispute must urgently be resolved

Google DocsUCU - End the dispute with Unite and embody the union’s commitment to equalityPlease NOTE: This letter has been sent to Jo Grady at 9am on Thursday 27 March 2025. Signatures are still accepted after this time. Dear Jo Grady, We, the undersigned UCU members and members of the community, urge you to do everything in your power to resolve the dispute with UCU Unite as soon as possible. UCU proudly signed up to the TUC's Anti-Racism Taskforce manifesto in 2020, which includes commitments to “work in partnership with our Black* employees and with our staff trade unions to take forward our work on anti-racism” yet these commitments have not materialised in positive action. It has been more than 1 year since UCU Black staff and the UCU's Black Members Standing Committee raised the alarm about toxic cultures of racism within UCU, affecting both staff and members. And it has been 1 year since UCU Unite declared a dispute with their employer for failing to provide a Safe and Professional Workplace Culture in March 2024. In March 2024, UCU Unite and UCU’s Black Members Standing Committee called for an independent review of racism experienced by UCU members and staff, which was agreed to by UCU. Panellists and terms of reference have been agreed but the review has not yet begun. The panellists have indicated they do not wish to commence the review while the UCU Unite dispute is ongoing, which is their right. Meanwhile, it appears race relations have drastically worsened during the dispute, including between UCU Black staff and the employer. UCU members have been mobilising in support of UCU Unite and UCU Black staff since the beginning of this dispute, including overwhelmingly passing motions at UCU Congress 2024 to address institutional racism in UCU and model the workplace practices we advocate for our members. UCU Black staff have been fighting for many years to have their experiences of racism acknowledged, addressed, and action taken so that they have dignity at work. It is woeful that UCU Black staff are still waiting for action and accountability after reporting experiences of workplace racism in ‘Listening Circles’ exercises that took place in Autumn 2022. Similarly, we are horrified to hear about an increased number of disciplinary cases against UCU Black staff, as well as the victimisation of UCU Unite Officers. As anti-racists and trade unionists, an injury to one is an injury to all. We need UCU to lead by example as an employer when it comes to equality - as is stated in the TUC's Anti-Racism Taskforce manifesto. This failure to address the grave issues identified by UCU Unite is having a debilitating effect on UCU staff and is therefore impacting UCU members across the UK. Coming at a time when post-16 education, especially the Higher Education sector, is being shaken to its core by unprecedented slashing of jobs and courses, we need UCU to strongly stand up for members and to embody the union’s commitment to equality. In solidarity with UCU Unite's Black staff group, we call for: The immediate dropping of all outstanding disciplinary cases against UCU Black staff An immediately stop to the victimisation and threats of potential disciplinary cases against UCU Unite Officers A bespoke training course for UCU management on what structural racism is and what being an anti-racist employer involves. This training course to be approved by UCU black staff. A more collaborative approach with Unite to meaningfully work toward ending structural discrimination. An acknowledgement that UCU has failed to address the findings of its own ‘listening circles’ exercise An acknowledgement that UCU has failed to meet the manifesto pledge of the TUC's Anti-Racism taskforce to which it is a signatory and to share with staff UCU’s involvement with the TUC’s Anti-Racism Taskforce. A commitment to immediately rectify its failings concerning both the ‘listening circles’ and the Anti-Racism Taskforce *Trades Union Congress (TUC) and UCU uses "Black" in a broad, political, and inclusive sense to describe people of color in the UK who have a shared history of colonialism, enslavement, and ongoing experiences of racism and diminished opportunities. **This form is manually updated, there may be a delay before your name is added. According to the University and College Union, nearly two-thirds of essential tutorial teaching at Oxford is carried out by academics employed on precarious short-term contracts or paid by the hour in a manner akin to Uber-style gig economy work.

“They compared our work to bedroom fitters, security guards and cleaners, and I kept thinking: ‘Yes, and all those people have no chance of fighting the gig economy, but we do.’”

Manifold @uminnpressThe Uberfication of the University | Manifold @uminnpress_The Uberfication of the University_ analyzes the emergence of the sharing economy and the companies behind it: LinkedIn, Uber, and Airbnb. The book considers the contemporary university, itself subject to such entrepreneurial practices, as one polemical site for the affirmative disruption of this model.

UCU members at Newcastle University have backed strike action in defence of jobs: 83% of members who voted did so in favour of strike action in a ballot with a turnout of 64%.

Management is making over £35m in cuts, has cancelled promotions, restricted travel and has opened a voluntary severance scheme. It has also refused to rule out compulsory redundancies.

At the same time as making these huge cuts at home the university is looking to open a campus in India.

www.ucu.org.ukNewcastle University staff vote to strikeStaff at Newcastle University overwhelmingly backed strike action in defence of jobs.

An overwhelming 82% of University of East Anglia (UEA) UCU members have voted in favour of strike action. The ballot resulted in the highest turnout UEA UCU has ever achieved, reaching 67%.

Management has threatened to cut over 190 staff members to meet continued budget shortfalls, including at least 30 staff in the faculty of medicine & health sciences, 25 in the faculty of science, 22 in the faculty of arts & humanities, and at least 90 from departments across professional services.

UEA now needs to begin meaningful negotiations to prevent compulsory redundancies if it wants to avoid industrial unrest.
