Pixel is the smallest dragon<p>Really enjoying this video essay "Goth Is White: Pallor, Prejudice and Purity" that someone <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/onHere" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>onHere</span></a> shared. It is very long but worth checking out. I've been discussing a ton with my friends in recent years about how punk is overwhelmingly white and how punk BIPOC folx are pushed away from the narratives of the scene that they built. </p><p>Goth as an alternative culture shares many of those parallels. The video covers topics including:<br>- the relation between white pallor skin as a goth aesthetic with classism and colorism<br>- the manner in which white privilege elevates Eurocentric narratives without cause in alternative spaces while simultaneously co-opting other cultures as aesthetics<br>- the subversive yet apolitical nature of goth, which can easily be construed into right-wing politic</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knrnIY8snKk" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=knrnIY8snK</span><span class="invisible">k</span></a></p><p>I recommend it to white folx who consider themselves "alt" to check themselves and to BIPOC folx looking for affirmation.</p><p>On a related topic, I also recommend "I Was a Weird Black Emo Teen in a Misery-Obsessed White Subculture" <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/i-was-a-weird-black-emo-teen-in-a-misery-obsessed-white-subculture/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">vice.com/en/article/i-was-a-we</span><span class="invisible">ird-black-emo-teen-in-a-misery-obsessed-white-subculture/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/emo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emo</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/goth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>goth</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/alternative" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>alternative</span></a> <a href="https://post.lurk.org/tags/punk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>punk</span></a></p>
