Ahhh all I want for my team is MacBooks for local bioinformatics dev and some local Linux server compute power. Seems to be a never ending back and forth with IT… The challenge is bioinformatics is very different to the often assumed traditional data science or software dev…

Anyone have any experience using #AWS workspaces or VNC as a #rstats or #bioinformatics dev environment. I much prefer the idea of keeping dev on a local laptop and avoiding potential latency issues, keeping a single file system, and the ability to work on the go even without internet, but would be interested to hear others experiences.

Finished sequencing & assembling new strain of a Haloarchea - here's ANI comparison plot to another genome ostensibly belonging to the same species. Difference between the two is about 10%. This pattern repeats through the genus.

Upcoming poster & preprint might be a bit spicy.

Question for #nanopore folks. I'm comparing collaborator's BAM vs mine, generated from same pod5. It looks like the collaborator's BAM has an extra qs: tag missing in mine.

Why would there be a difference? One would think default pod5 commands would record same tags for all output BAM?

Anyone else finding the sequencing costs appear to be getting more expensive rather then continuing to decline. I'm thinking its likely related to inflation, wages and current US uncertainty...? oh and Illumina and alike only delivering true reduced cost/GB on large scale flowcells, which aren't suitable for many small to medium size projects...
