As we watch a lot of funding for #research being cut, affecting vital projects and driving many talents away, I can't help seeing #academic #conferences as inappropriately decadent. Random example: this conference has an entire subpage about #sustainability: confer.co.nz/isc2026/ Does it mean #hybrid, you might ask? No. You fly to New Zealand, and pay an extra 400 - 6500 NZD if you want to attend a field trip: nearly a year's worth of a PhD student bursary in Poland. Who has this money in #sedimentology? Mostly researchers in the #fossilfuels industry.
Am I interested in the scientific content of the conference? Yes.
Am I ashamed by how sustainably and inclusively it is delivered? Also yes. I wish we scientists weren't so tone deaf sometimes.

Our current interviewee, Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen, organized a series of #conferences about #intuitiveMusic, recently called: European Intutitive Music Conference.

Hans Tonino is the current main organizer, and this summer it happens in #Rotterdam (24-27 July).
The program has many items for attendees, but also public concerts and children's workshops.

If you are planning conferences, conventions and trade shows over the next several months, it's very likely that there will be attendance declines due to the current political climate.

It's going to be a very rough time for organizers and events alike this year and I feel for them especially the smaller orgs and non profits.

So what if the novelty of traveling to a new city, was there a place with meeting people who are really adjacent to your professional network ?

For example what if we had a open source and open science conference running concurrently?

I think this already happens in terms of streams within a conference like #pyconau.

I'm just wondering what would happen if you chain adjacent or completely different conferences together?

Physicists have never been immune to US rightwing attacks. Even US citizens were victimised by the McCarthy witch hunt. Some like David Bohm, were interrogated and had to flee the country. In his case he went to Brasil. The US right have a record on this.
