Good morning. 📷🧵🐦

19 March 2025

Tomorrow is the first day of spring. Spring will be here when tomorrow is today—hurray.

Lately, I’ve been daydreaming about a new camera—a Canon R5 mirrorless model paired with a Canon 200-800 mm lens. Truth be told, it’s really just the lens I want, but it’s not compatible with my existing cameras, and there are no adapters to make it work. It’s funny how hobbies create the perfect excuse to buy new things. I already own four cameras—not counting my phone or the little Sony camera gathering dust in the upper cabinet of my desk. Let’s be honest, a new camera is far from a necessity.

For my wife, it’s all about sewing and quilting machines. It’s as if certain businesses saw hobbies as untapped gold mines and thought, “I can make money from that.”

"Sometimes, you just need hobbies." - Spencer Dinwiddie

Invasive house sparrows are terrible! So prolific that our poor native bluebirds really struggle. It takes gobs of time and active management to ensure a bluebird couple can establish a nest, but even then the threat isn't over. They need your help!

I use two-hole boxes. With the extra hole they can generally defend the nest. I get mine from JackQuest on Etsy. Well priced, masterfully built.

Not an AD, but he is part of my naturalist chapter. I don't get anything. I just like supporting a friend, cool dude, and bird advocate who does great work.

It is hard to believe it’s already nesting season here in the #KC ‘burbs. This fella and his pretty lady are interested in our back box. They better hurry up, because the dumb house sparrows are aggressive this season, already!

Last year it took many nest evictions and a few sparrow traps before a native couple settled in.

"Enough Is Enough" ... We've been blessed with multiple #EasternBluebird broods each summer for the past several years, and as such, we enjoy seeing the little families revisit our feeders all year. Their favorites are dried mealworms and shelled black oil sunflower seeds. But one thing they definitely don't seem to like are cold, snowy days

You know how I can tell it's bad out there for our #KC-ish birds? I just saw two eastern bluebirds trying to get at our suet. Don't think I've ever seen that before.

Makes sense, we've had snow on the ground since Jan 5. This is the longest I can remember it sticking in my 25 years here. Cool! Good for mosquito and pest control.

Posture Perfect

I think the posture of this eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) is interesting. He is looking out over grassy fields for his next meal.

Blue and Rust Beauty

This image was on that I looked at yesterday (8 November 2024), but I didn't like the image. Today, though, I looked at it again and like the image. Sometimes it is all about your perspective at a moment in time, don't you think? The bird is an eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis).

My photo gallery contains more that 900 images that I've chosen to share. Most are there for their visual appeal but there are a few novelty images. I add new images every couple of days.
