Eels is an American rock band formed 1991 in LA by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by the stage name E. Band members have changed over the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band's work. Eels' music is often filled with themes of family, death, and unrequited love.

Did you know multiple prominent people from #Ancient #Rome had #pet #eels?

Initially raised for food, many well-off Romans fell in love with Muraenidae, a type of eel.

They were so beloved, that Cicero-praised orator Lucius Licinius Crassus held a funeral for his #fish.

Another orator, Quintus Hortensius, would be labelled a "Piscinarius" (fish fancier) by Cicero, for his deep #love for an eel.

Antonia, daughter of Mark Antony, adorned her favourite eel with earrings.

This is a photo of a Muray Eel (Muraena helena). It shows a large fish, with a long, elongated body in a fish tank in a zoo. The animal has a girthy, fleshy appearance, without obvious fins. It does however have a small dorsal fin which extends along its whole body, The head is elongated, much like that of a snake. It has a small, round bright blue eye. The colouring of its body is a sandy beige-white, with a splattered pattern resembling ocean sand. Rocks and a hollow wooden stump surround the eel.

A song about being alone, feeling a bit of pain, numbing it till it comes back.

The rest of the album is just this good, or just this maudlin.

Today’s listening is ‘Royal Albert Hall’, the 2015 album by Eels.

This triple live album by Eels was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London in June 2014.

A live Eels show is always interesting, as Mr Everett often offers up radically re-worked versions of his better-known songs.

This concert was appropriately ‘polite’, suiting the surroundings, so songs like ‘Last Stop: This Town’ sound very different.

E even plays the huge Albert Hall organ on the final track!
