Technical University of Munich: New method significantly reduces AI energy consumption. “The enormous computing resources needed to train neural networks for artificial intelligence (AI) result in massive power consumption. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed a method that is 100 times faster and therefore much more energy efficient.”
Caltech: Air Pollution and the Public Health Costs of AI. “With the growing adoption of large language models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the enormous environmental footprint of artificial intelligence, or AI, is increasingly in the news. This cost is often discussed in terms of electricity consumed, carbon released into the atmosphere, and water needed to operate massive data centers. But […]

Gas usage up a bit for the past month but mercifully the bill is still lower than the direct debit going out. Electric up around £9 for the month due to increased dehumidifier use. #Cost of living #EnergyUsage #UK
Well the gas & electricity bill is probably down by 40% this month. Mixture of lower rates and maybe showing quite how much the lodger added to the bill. #CostOfLiving #EnergyUsage

2 numbers for your consideration:
1) On CBC Spark it was pointed out that it takes 100x+ the energy to *manufacture* a AA battery then the energy the battery holds.
2) Michel Bauwens of the P2P Foundation said we use 2-3x the energy to *move* a thing as it takes to *make* a thing.
Blue line (the upper one) = gas usage for that day
Pink line (the lower one) = max outside temperature for that day
Temp goes down, gas usage goes up!
