Once you could hear the sound of koalas -
"all you hear is trucks now..."

Destruction of koala habitat through sprawl, roads and dogs

"Almost 2m hectares of forests suitable for koalas have been destroyed since 2011. They are one of more than 2,000 Australian species listed as under threat in what scientists are calling an extinction crisis." >>

Day 14 🐨🌳🔥🚜🐄🌾

“Nearly 2m hectares of #forests suitable for endangered koalas have been destroyed since the iconic species was declared a #ThreatenedSpecies in 2011, according to analysis for Guardian Australia.

The scale of #habitat #destruction in #Queensland and #NewSouthWales – states in which the koala is formally recognised as being at risk of #extinction – has continued despite political promises it would be protected.

Analysis by the #AustralianConservationFoundation using state and federal government #data found 1,964,200 hectares of #koala habitat were cleared between 2012 and 2021, the latest year for which there was complete data.

The total amount of destroyed forest and bush covered an area larger than greater Sydney, taking in the #BlueMountains, the #Illawarra, the southern highlands and the #Goulburn and #Shoalhaven regions.

It is more than 10 times larger than the area the #NSW government is assessing for a possible “great koala national park”. But most of the cleared area – 81% – was in Queensland.

About three-quarters of the lost forest is estimated to have been cleared for agriculture, to create #cattle pasture and #crop fields. The analysis found 13% was removed by the #forestry industry and 5% for development of infrastructure, including #mining. Just 4% was likely due to natural causes, such as bushfire and drought.”

There’s a reason the Minister for the Environment has been kept quiet.

De-extinction or pre-extinction? Biotech company's resurrected 'dire wolves' raise questions
Scientists created a version of the extinct dire wolf. But we should be directing our resources to preventing extinction in the first place.

'The finished animals, if born, may resemble their extinct counterparts in outward appearance and some behaviour – but they will not be genetically identical. Rather, they will be hybrids, mosaics or functional stand-ins.

'That doesn’t negate the value of these projects. In fact, it might be time to update our expectations. If the goal is to restore ecological roles, not to perfectly recreate extinct genomes, then these animals may still serve important functions. But it also means we must be precise in our language. These are synthetic creations, not true returns.'

The ConversationCan we really resurrect extinct animals, or are we just creating hi-tech lookalikes?

Marketing and Science. "Colossal’s real achievement is pretty impressive. It’s a step forward in synthetic biology. But it’s not a scientific resurrection. It is marketing. It has taken a minor genetic tweak — twenty edits among nearly 20,000 genes — and spun it into a story grand enough to grace the cover of Time and other publishers.

Remus — along with his siblings Romulus and Khaleesi — is not a dire wolf." #extinction #wolf #science
