The #terrestrial #pulmonate #gastropods (#Stylommatophora, Gastropoda) have two pairs of #retractile #tentacles, an #apomorphy (#evolutionary innovation of the stem species) of the higher taxon Euthyneura. The rear pair of tentacles is elongated and has #eyes at its tips.
My photos show them in a close #macro shot using the Mediterranean #snail #species #Cornu #aspersum (#Helicidae).

The third time is the charm - let's congratulate our student Julia Riepe for successfully completing a second project module in our lab titled "Marking hard-shelled freshwater snails: Impact on survival in presence of predatory crayfish in Physella acuta". By conducting feeding trials using snails marked with different colors, we were able to learn more about the ability of Procambarus clarkii to discriminate between prey items. Kudos, Julia!

It's time to applaud our student Julia Riepe again for successfully completing a project module in our lab titled "Developmental risk environments: impact on shell color,
shape and thickness in Physella acuta", she revealed the differential effects of crayfish kairomones and alarm cues on snail morphology across 323 snails. Thank you for another successful scientific contribution, Julia! #ecology #evolution #gastropods @academicchatter

We applaud our student Dustin Raeke for finishing his Research module in our lab titled "Environmental effects on gastropod personality". His great efforts allowed him to study behavioral repeatability in 166 snails across two environments by conducting a whopping 830 experiments. Look forward to reading more about his results in a publication that will be prepared in the near future! #ecology #evolution #personality #plasticity #gastropods @academicchatter

Today, we would like to congratulate our student Julia Riepe for completing her Bachelor thesis titled "Phenotypic traits, their corrections and impact of survival in
freshwater snails in presence of predatory crayfish". Due to her research efforts, we were able to identify what behaviors and morphology maximize individual survival of Physella acuta in the presence of Procambarus clarkii. We are currently preparing her results for publication! #ecology #evolution #gastropods @academicchatter

We're happy to congratulate our student Melissa Loskant for completing a project module in out lab titled "Improved snail genome annotation with AUGUSTUS: The role of data filtering and selection". She was successful in determining the optimal parameters for training high-quality AUGUSTUS models across all available gastropod genomes, which is important information for all annotation-related publications!
