Milder night last night so chanced the box. Still early in the year so very few species / numbers yet (roll on May/June). More Common Quakers (x4) & Early Grey (x1). Also first sighting in 2025 of Oak Beauty and Small Quaker. Moths on my finger today are...

1) Oak Beauty (top left)
2) Small Quaker (top right)
3) Common Quaker (BL)
4) Early Grey (BR)

A medium-sized 3cm triangular moth perched on a finger. Three distinct horizontal bands of chestnut, white and chestnut again separated by jagged black lines. It has a furry head and a creamy yellow furry abdomen. It has large feathered antennae which it is curling underneath itself. It looks very freshly emerged.
A small 1cm rather plain, peppery light brown moth on a finger. It has a sandy brown furry head and two faint stigmata on each wing, one orbital, one reniform.
A 1.5cm narrow arrow-head shaped moth on a finger. It is a sandy, gingery-brown colour. It looks freshly emerged. It has a diamond shaped furry head. Its wings are gingery brown with two stigmata on each wing, one orbital, one reniform. Near the bottom of each wing is a horizontal, thin wavy line of brown which separates the ginger brown wing above with a lighter brown segment below it. Thus, resembling a hem or a fringe. The hem is also peppered with a row of faint black dots running uniformly from wing edge to wing edge.
A small 1.5cam narrow arrow-head shaped moth on a finger tip. It is much like the Common Quaker before in shape and size but is silvery-grey flecked with flashes of black. Two grey stigmata on each wing, one orbital and one reniform. It has two thin pipe-cleaner like antennae which stretch out horizontally either side of its head.

Part 1:

A bumper night with lots of scurrying micromoths, many of which eluded the camera. Two new macro species for me were:

1) Phoenix
2) Blue-bordered carpet

Also returning for the first time in 2024

3) Treble Brown Spot
4) Yponomeuta (probably Bird-cherry ermine but only examination of genitalia would determine which species ... and I don't kill my moths;)

Overhead shot of flat, triangular moth with a small head and pin-eyes. Heavily patterned. Largely deep chestnut red-brown with a jagged band of white with light and dark brown random markings within. The bottom wing edge is also a very jagged band, with similar random reddish brown markings on white. Supposedly resembles flames and phoenix rising therefrom
Small flat triangular moth. Largely bright white with chestnut brown collar below its head and two similar splodges halfway down its wing at either wing edge. Within those at the wing edge is a black dot. Similar markings in each wing corner, above which is a very faint grey-blue band stretching across both wings. In this specimen it is very faint. In others, it is more apparent.
A small flat moth. More butterfly shaped, with two very light buff wings (like an off-white). Two dark brown-black thin epaulettes stretching either side of its head along the leading wing edge. About two-thirds down the wing is a thin dark brown jagged line, underneath which are two sets of three brown dots in a row. The second set on each wing (nearer the centre of the moth) has a smaller dark spot between the second and third larger dark spot. The wing edges are fringed.
A side-on shot of a minuscule tubular moth on a finger. It is bright white with lots of black spots, resembling ermine. Its tail which curves up ever so slightly, ends in a fringe.

I’d love to know for sure what this extraterrestrial-like creature is. I think it’s either a white ermine or satin moth, but better lepidopterists than me might correct me. I took the poorer photo looking at the moth’s face and comb-like antennae yesterday - a difficult angle as it was sitting on the garage door. I took the other photo earlier of another example, sitting on the floor.
