I recently added email to my mastodon instance, and with that success, I'm ready to finally cut email ties with Google. I bought a new domain name and I'll set that up with postfix/dovecot/etc, then start moving all of my various internet accounts over to it.
The new domain has a .net TLD instead of the current .com TLD, and that's nice; it's more appropriate since I'm not running a business. Now I'm just waiting for the DNS changes to propagate.
This weekend's project:
Replaced my #Postfix #MTA #mailserver with a new one. I had been running a #Ubuntu based one since 2020, and it didn't deal well with an in-place upgrade.
New machine set up on #Debian 12, with a bunch of tips stolen from @mwl 's book Run Your Own Mail Server and from https://workaround.org/ispmail-bookworm/

@gerowen running your own mailserver ncan be a minor timesink but also probably well worth it - email is the original killer app. there are quite a few ways you can do it. I set up logwatch to send out mail to gmail and it is always spotty #rroundcube #postfix #own mailbox this may run better on a vm or a vps/vpn combo - you are more advanced, i see this as a good project for you and me both really but email is a deep pocket of knowledge - lots of knobs and options
also caveat this is like c 2015 but i like the concept

I just need Mail for a couple accounts and domains for myself and some friends. Would be nice to have a WebGUI, but is not a must.
Woohoo! I finally got email working for darkmoon.social. Emails appear to be flagged as spam, so there's more work to do, but that's a major step forward. And it only took me 2 1/2 years to get it done.
I'm running the mail server locally because I apparently hate myself, and I don't need free time, but at least it doesn't cost any extra money.

Well, after a lot of swearing… I *think* I have a Raspberry Pi 400 running #AlpineLinux … tethered to my 4G phone hotspot … acting as a crude WiFi router/bridge for my border router running #OpenBSD which is tunnelling to my OpenBSD VPS at Binary Lane.
Over that tunnel, I now have #Postfix on the home mail server, relaying over the VPN to #OpenSMTPD on the VPS.
Should be useful the day I have to leave Internode… but for now, it's bypassing the rather dead NBN service (thank-you #CycloneAlfred).
Why can't I get a Docker container (using docker-compose) to access Postfix running on the host on port 25? 
I must be missing something, obviously

@mavu We use #postfix in #chatmail setup, and so does @doncow
It is well-documented and in our setup at https://github.com/chatmail/server there are only two small postfix configs.

@antondollmaier I configured Postfix to reject all email from that TLD. It’s sent me nothing of value. #postfix #SelfHosted

#fedihelp , please: I'm #selfhosting #dovecot and #postfix and running out of disk space with my mails reaching back into last century. I'd like to remove the oldest ones and keep an archive of any kind on a different host. What would be the easiest way to achieve that?
Maybe just imap-sync to some special maildir?

Considering to migrate off #Google and other US #bigtech dependencies since they seem to get stuck deep in #Trump|s asshole. What is supposed to be the "gold standard" replacement for self hosting a tiny OSS mail server (own domain, 4 accounts, IMAP + mobile + web client) these days? Long years ago I've used #postfix + #dovecot. Is still still the way to go?

I just published an updated #Docker image for #Postfix 3.10.1, based on #archlinux.
The email server is fully customizable via Docker mounted volumes for usage on a Virtual Private Server (#VPS). Just use the Docker registry provided by the project. 
found #k9 #Android or #thunderbird #Windows11 email client had expired #certificate error and would not download emails so I restarted dovecot on Linux server and error stopped #dovecot #postfix #certificate #error #linux certificate had been updated but Dovecot had not synced @thunderbird
