I can confirm new tech is not always saving energy. Refrigerators are one example. Cars from the early 1990s are using about 20-25% less fuel as modern cars and have catalytic converters as well. The expected milage is 2-3x higher than todays cars. Yes, modern cars have less harmfull exhaust gases, but it is not that much and if you calculate the environmental impact of a car or any device, energy consumption is only part of the whole picture. The energy and ressources to made the thing have to be considered as well. So buying something old and pre-used is often the better choice and it's saving money.

It was -7 C when I got up this morning. -6 C when I got around to measuring the temperature outside, where our heat pump was reducing the air temperature to -12 C in order to heat air inside to +45 C.
Initial power consumption is 1350 W, which drops as soon as we approach the set temperature.
For a total cost of only about €1500 including installation (no subsidy was available so that's really the total cost) we can now heat our downstairs very well for very little money and with very low emissions.

A blog post about buying a new appliance. I don't do this often. In general I try to repair things instead of buying new. But in this case the old refrigerator (which was in our home when we moved here 17 years ago) was using an absurd amount of electricity. Our consumption will be about 600 kWh a year lower due to replacing an old fridge and an old freezer with a new A-rated appliance.
