Took the RF 100-400 lens with me yesterday in case I had a chance to shoot some birds (it is light enough that it's an easy decision to bring it). Got plenty of seagull shots from the beach in the afternoon while the band kids played on the rides.

GULLiver's Nest

Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each of the 54 gull species inhabiting our beautiful planet.

Today: Heermann's Gull

You probably guessed it, the name refers to a dude, namely 19th century explorer Adolphus Lewis Heermann.

As you can see, this species looks quite different from most other gull species; its body is much darker. Even their call differs from most other gulls' calls. So, this cutie is a bit easier to recognize than most of its fellows!

90% of their population lives in California, where they can often be seen together with brown pelicans from whom they steal food such as small fish or marine invertebrates.

Unfortunately, their status is "Near Threatened" because of climate change (-> habitat loss, less food) and because apparently people used to disturb them during breeding season to steal their eggs?! That's why Isla Rasa, where most of them breed, was declared a sanctuary in 1964.

GULLiver's Nest

Hi, I love gulls, so I will try to draw every single one of the 54 gull species inhabiting planet Earth.

Today: Black-Tailed Gull

The name is pretty straightforward; it has a black tail and it's a gull, so that's that. Its German name is "Japanmöwe" (Japan Gull). Even though it can not only be found in Japan but also at the coastlines of Eastern China, Manchuria, the Kuril Islands, the Philippines and even in North America, its cultural significance in Japan is pretty special.

Kabushima is a small peninsula in Northern Japan. At the local Shinto shrine, which was built by fishermen in 1269 and rebuilt several times, the black-tailed gull is worshipped as a messenger of the Goddess of fishery. Therefore, locals and tourists alike go there to feed the gulls and pay them respect. The result? 40,000 black-tailed gulls nest there every summer!

Fortunately, due to the absence of predators, the number of black-tailed gulls (already large) keeps increasing, so it's classified as "Least Concern".

FUN FACT
Gulls wouldn't be gulls if they didn't cause a bit of chaos from time to time, right? The black-tailed gulls regularly cause delays at Hanada airport.

GULLiver's Nest

Hi, I love gulls, so I try to draw each of the 54 different gull species on planet Earth.

Today: Olrog's Gull

Like many other gull species (and bird species in general, really), this bird is named after a person, namely biologist Claës Christian Olrog who first described it.

It's a large gull (50cm aka one mini blahaj in length, with a wingspan of 140cm aka almost three mini blahaj) with black wings and back.

Native to the Atlantic coast of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, it mainly feeds on crabs. That's why, in its native range, it's also called "crab-eater gull" (what would be your name if you were called after your favourite food?)

Unfortunately, this beautiful birb is classified as "Near Threatened" due to its restricted breeding range and, as is so often the case, habitat loss.
