Wenn der Chor so groß ist, dass er sich in zwei Gruppen verbeugen muss, wird klar, dass das Schillertheater für die #KomischeOper wirklich eine Nummer zu klein ist.

Berlin kann sich glücklich schätzen, dass wir hier ein Ensemble haben, das durchaus Broadway- oder West-End-Qualität hat. Eine englischsprachige Inszenierung von #SweeneyTodd in Deutschland ist an sich schon ein mittleres Wunder.

Nicht mal der deutsche Akzent des Richters hat gestört. Passte sogar ziemlich gut zur Rolle.

"Hot Child in the City" is a song by English-Canadian musician #NickGilder. It was released in June 1978 as a single from the album #CityNights. It went to No. 1 both in Canada (October 14, 1978) and in the United States (October 28, 1978). It was not his first No. 1 single: as the lead singer of #SweeneyTodd, he had hit No. 1 in Canada on June 26, 1976 (in the #RPM listing) with the single "Roxy Roller", which remained at the top for three weeks.

(A Little Priest, from Sweeney Todd -- Patti Lupone and Michael Cerveris, the 2005 Broadway revival. This was *such* a good production that I had the lucky opportunity to see.

This is a TERRIBLE recording though, sorry! The production was SO good.)

Time for some #MusicalMusings on the current production of #SweeneyTodd on Broadway with Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster.

1) This might have become my second favorite production of Sweeney Todd (first will always be Patti and Michael). But I get why some people are grumpy about it: it is capital C CAMPY. They emphasize and reveal comedic moments, which makes for a very different overall experience, coming off as far more unhinged, but also not quite the classic Greek chorus tragedy of fate most productions emphasize. But like...oh my gosh I loved the camp of it soooo much and it made for a unique production

2) Yes, Aaron Tveits is incredibly hot and it finally makes sense why Mrs. Lovett would be obsessed with him. And Sutton Foster's Lovett is HORNY for him and commits to the camp 230%. But like, yes, I also would rub my feet on his chest and would feel hot and bothered watching him get aggressively murderous...this may have awakened something in me 😅

That may have been the beginning of my obsession with the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. "We're so grateful to sing Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece every single day," Josh Groban explains at the Tiny Desk. "He was so brilliant at juxtaposing the beautiful with the horrific." (It turns out that both Groban and I named our dogs "Sweeney Dog," something I learned when I introduced the cast.) Expect a wave of emotions throughout this performance: empathy for Sweeney (Groban) and Mrs. Lovett (Annaleigh Ashford) with their songs of vengeance and longing, "My Friends," and "By the Sea"; desire with the quartet's vocal counterpoint performed in "Johanna (Act 2 Sequence)"; laughter with the duet's performance of "A Little Priest." Incredibly, this Tiny Desk version of the musical is no less impactful — the 26-piece orchestra currently playing the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre gets a nine-piece orchestration courtesy of Jonathan Tunick, Sondheim's longtime collaborator, led by conductor Alex Lacamoire.
