Pretty quiet on the mothing front last night. Almost full moon, clear and slightly cooler night meant less action (... or maybe more action if you saw my previous Sex Lives of a Cabbage Moth post! 😮 )

Just a handful in the box this morning, but these included four beauties:

1) BLACK ARCHES
2) MARBLED BEAUTY
3) MARBLED GREEN
4) DOUBLE-STRIPED PUG

Overhead shot of a 2.5cm long moth called Black Arches. It is triangular. It has a white background with black markings. The top third has just a few black dots. There is then a thick, black, horizontal, wavy, shark-toothed edged band across the middle. A thinner wavy, shark-toothed line runs close to the bottom edge. It has two large, feathered antennae.
Overhead shot of a 0.5 centimetre moth. It is arrowhead shaped. It has a jigsaw, marbled, green effect, made up of lots of irregular shapes and bands of quite vivid light and dark green, some of the shaped edged in white.
An overhead shot of a 1cm Marbled Green moth. It is arrowhead shaped. It is very similar to the previous marbled beauty moth. However, it is slightly larger and the marbling effect is duller. It is still a jigsaw of random shapes of green creating a marbling effect.
Overhead shot of a Double-striped pug moth, about 1 centimetre wide. Its wings are such that if you imagine a burlesque or Spanish dancer with arms outstretched straight left and right, each hand holding the bottom hem of a flowing skirt, so that the skirt fans out in front. These wings are grey-brown with many thin wavy bands and lines running horizontally across. The bottom edge of the wings if fringed. The moth looks freshly pupated and clearly marked.

As well as larger macro moths, there are thousands of micro moths, some barely perceptible to the eye. Four micros from today's moth box include:

1) yponomeuta evonymella (Bird-cherry ermine) [Top Left]
2) argyresthia brockeella (Gold W) [TR]
3) digitivalva pulicariae (Fleabane Smudge) [BL]
4) caloptilia rufipennella (Rufous Stilt or Small Red Slender) [BR]

Professional wildlife photographers .... don't you get at me. I am not a photographer myself, I am not blessed with a massive zoom or impressive tripod. But it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it that counts - and I did it from distance with my little snapper poking out the bathroom window! A photo of a Great Spotted Woodpecker ... a rare but welcome visitor to our garden birdfeeder.

Indulged in my two fave hobbies & voted for the Green Party in the all before breakfast!

6.4km before checking, cataloguing, photographing and releasing that roosted overnight. This is (rather tatty) CHINESE CHARACTER - so called because the faint silver lines on its wing are said to resemble Chinese character 山. Size of your little finger nail and mimics bird dropping to put off predators.

A small moth which is flat along the bottom, but holds its wings steeply above its abdomen and which slope down towards its ground-level head resembling a speech bubble or a comma on its side. It is white-grey with grey-blue dots running along the rear edge of the wing. The middle of the wing is more grey-brown with dark patches nearby. On the grey-brown patch, a fine silver line resembling a Chinese character for the word mountain. It sits on a terracotta plate. Across the bottom are some running statistics from the morning run. Distance 6.41km, Time 46:41, Pace 7:17 minute kilometres average.
