This species is native to North America, but escapees from breeders are sometimes found living in the wild in Europe as well, such as this beautiful individual.

Very colorful Duck with red eye, orange beak, green, black and blue head with some white stripes, and a brown, beige, black and blue body. It is swimming in a lake. The surrounding greenery is reflected on the surface of the water.

Apparently these are called Wood Ducks because they nest in tree cavities. I always thought it was because they look like they've been carved out of wood and painted With toy soldier paints.

We went to meet friends at a local park with a marsh but they had to back out. Luckily we went early enough to spot the birds. Anhinga, Wood Ducks, Green Heron, Great Egret
