Should I turn "Fediverse sharing" on over at Threads?
Good-tempered replies welcome.
@davidallengreen yes. Hopefully people “over there” will notice that the quality of replies & interaction “over here” is way better…
@davidallengreen
I think it’s a good idea. It shows Threads people’s interest and will hopeful encourage them to continue with further integration.
@davidallengreen Yes, please. For people like me, not being on Threads, this would be most welcome: to be able to follow you here and interact with you there.
@davidallengreen Yes please. I follow you here anyway but if you turn it on there I can also follow conversations you are part of on threads from here.
It’s very limited for now. You’ll be able to see our replies but other Threads users won’t. You’ll won’t be able to reply to replies, only like them.
@davidallengreen You could also consider following @ap.brid.gy from your BlueSky account, so that we could follow you on BlueSky from here too… (equally if you follow @bsky.brid.gy on here, BlueSky folks will be able to follow your Mastodon account).
@simonwood @davidallengreen @bsky.brid.gy second vote for this additional option
@simonwood @davidallengreen That only works if your instance hasn't blocked the BlueSky bridge account because of it automatically opting you in to having all their public posts shared on BlueSky when you follow a single person on there.
Yes, I know, but a lot of instances blocked it as a precaution.
@anarchic_teapot @davidallengreen bsky.brid.gy is not on mastodon.green’s moderated server list, so should be ok?
@simonwood @davidallengreen On that server, anyway.
@davidallengreen If you are posting stuff on Threads that you don’t post directly to the Fediverse then yes. It’ll enable people not on Threads to follow you and get the Threads only content.
If you are already posting everything here, then I don’t think it’ll add anything. Maybe it’ll advertise the existence of the Fediverse to Threads users, as the account name on your profile has a circular icon added. That has further info about the Fediverse when tapped.
That would be great to see how that functions over here, having been playing around with the crois platform sharing on bsky, so would be good to see how It compares...
@davidallengreen I think it's a good idea, because platforms are not your friends. Meta will only consider doing this while they're still the underdog.
@davidallengreen I suspect even in the long run, the average person will prefer centralised platforms with algorithmic feeds. But at least if fediverse sharing becomes the norm, people will have an easy way to reduce their interaction with a particular platform (without being completely cut off) if it / it's users start behaving particularly badly.
@davidallengreen no idea about the technicals but, lazily and selfishly, I'd like to be able to keep tabs on you from over here. Since Twitter failed I feel like I'm missing out on one platform or another, although not quite enough to get around to signing up to them.
@davidallengreen Yes. The more Meta see people using federation the more they will develop the bridge. Hopefully. From our POV though I'm not sure of the benefit. If you remain here too, Mastodon users get better functionality by following you here rather than your Threads acct..
@davidallengreen Yes. Otherwise Threads in just another billionaire-owned site.
