I got a haircut today. Usually the chatter with the hairdresser is about the school or the construction work nearby etc. Today, it was about how she went through every shampoo and hairbrush and comb she buys and removed anything coming from the US.
People outside Denmark often don’t realise how much the country considers itself a US ally. They are ride or die. They joined the Iraq war even though that was a dumb idea. They had an entire reality TV show about the US ambassador a few years ago.
And yet. The last month, that has completely changed. The Greenland thing baffled the country and worried the government. But it’s really the about face on Ukraine that is angering people. They thought that because they had the US’s back, it was be reciprocated. They thought they shared values.
The sentiment of betrayal is growing.
It’s a small country. It doesn’t weigh much. But when you lose an ally like this, you should be very, very worried. Because there’s probably no one left who truly cares for you. Only sycophants looking for qui pro quos.
Supermarket chains are now highlighting which products come from Europe, to help people avoid American goods: https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/penge/vil-du-boykotte-amerikanske-varer-nu-saetter-dagligvarekaempe-sort-stjerne-ved (with apologies to the other continents who are caught in the cross-fire).
Seriously, this is an unbelievable change for Denmark.
@juliette especially since it’s the (historically) unpolitical supermarket. They’ve never been first-movers on anything that might look like activism.
@juliette boycott Israeli goods as well.
US citizen here. This doesn't surprise me much. What saddens me is that they didn't do it earlier. During his first term, things got pretty wonky already and a bit of peer pressure would have helped a lot.
But then Biden got in and said "We're back" as if "problem solved". But it was not solved. We are a nation of process, and what the felon's first term showed is that our processes don't protect us.
If during the Biden administration, they'd helped him see that Constitutional safeguards had to be put in place for people to trust us again, there might have been time. Now we can see the problem but not fix the safeguards. (Not like I didn't raise this point back then, too, but I'm not exactly the one running the show here.)
Anyway, I appreciate your detailing this information about how things look over there. On behalf of what we know to be a majority of Americans, including those who didn't vote for the felon and those who now regret doing so, I can say we're sorry. But really I don't expect that to be procedurally worth much until we fix some process. :(
@kentpitman I certainly see your point.
But as a diverse group of smaller countries we accept that each coutry have their own peculiar processes and we don't really want to interfere with domestic politics.
So as long First Term Trump was mainly focused on domestic issues, we were quite happy just making a bit of fun if him.
Getting seriously about Greenland, looking suspiciously at Canada, and betraying Ukraine, that is where we can't stay silent.
Sorry it took us so long.
@juliette did you see this article in Information newspaper. In Danish. Perhaps you can understand some of it. https://www.information.dk/moti/2025/02/savner-mcdonalds-helt-vildt?kupon=eyJpYXQiOjE3NDA5MjQ1MzYsInN1YiI6IjMwOTk6ODI3OTQyIn0.9Clxvbd8elOyCoGT6kewjA
You really don't want to share the values of this country. Our propaganda says freedom and peace and liberty and shit, but the reality here is racism, slavery, medical bankruptcy, for-profit prisons, and an early grave.
To anyone surprised, just ask the people of Haiti. Ask the Vietnamese. Ask the Chileans. Ask Guatemalans. These nations know the reality of the USA. Hollywood isn't it. Attica is.
@juliette Kissinger disse: Ser inimigo dos EUA pode ser perigoso, mas ser amigo é fatal!
@juliette From an American, good. We need to be seen for what we are now. It's going to hurt us for a long time, but it has to happen.
@juliette that's interesting. i've never felt that as an American visitor to Denmark.
but i'm glad people are turning their backs on this shithole.
i'm not worried, bc i think we kinda sorta deserve this after what our citizens have done (and what little the previous admin did to stop all this). maybe it;s time for the american empire and all of its influence to just wither.
i giess china may fill the void. not sure how good that is. maybe europe will step up
@rustoleumlove I’d love a world in which there are no more superpowers tbh. Just sovereign people respecting each other’s space and agency.
Probably too much to hope for.
@juliette I am despondent about being lumped in with our regime.
CaliGreenMark sounds good. Have a chat with California.
I'm so sorry. I truly don't understand what the fuck is wrong with people in my country.
@juliette Those of us who are miserable about what’s going on here are also doing economic boycotts, so I am perfectly delighted to have our friends in Europe join us!
Okay, I’m not delighted at anything today. I’m shaken and ashamed. This is a terrible day.
@juliette trump is leading America into ruin, and there isn't a lot I can do to change it. I'm horrified watching our allies turning their backs on us, one after the other. But that is what you must do. You have to show our government that they are careening down the wrong path. And I will continue to voice my dissent from within the country. But our former allies should completely stop supporting the U.S. right now. Hopefully someday we can correct this wrong, and we can be allies again.
@juliette Feeling that same energy in Canada too
