I got a haircut today. Usually the chatter with the hairdresser is about the school or the construction work nearby etc. Today, it was about how she went through every shampoo and hairbrush and comb she buys and removed anything coming from the US.
People outside Denmark often don’t realise how much the country considers itself a US ally. They are ride or die. They joined the Iraq war even though that was a dumb idea. They had an entire reality TV show about the US ambassador a few years ago.
And yet. The last month, that has completely changed. The Greenland thing baffled the country and worried the government. But it’s really the about face on Ukraine that is angering people. They thought that because they had the US’s back, it was be reciprocated. They thought they shared values.
The sentiment of betrayal is growing.
It’s a small country. It doesn’t weigh much. But when you lose an ally like this, you should be very, very worried. Because there’s probably no one left who truly cares for you. Only sycophants looking for qui pro quos.

Seriously, this is an unbelievable change for Denmark.
@juliette especially since it’s the (historically) unpolitical supermarket. They’ve never been first-movers on anything that might look like activism.

US citizen here. This doesn't surprise me much. What saddens me is that they didn't do it earlier. During his first term, things got pretty wonky already and a bit of peer pressure would have helped a lot.
But then Biden got in and said "We're back" as if "problem solved". But it was not solved. We are a nation of process, and what the felon's first term showed is that our processes don't protect us.
If during the Biden administration, they'd helped him see that Constitutional safeguards had to be put in place for people to trust us again, there might have been time. Now we can see the problem but not fix the safeguards. (Not like I didn't raise this point back then, too, but I'm not exactly the one running the show here.)
Anyway, I appreciate your detailing this information about how things look over there. On behalf of what we know to be a majority of Americans, including those who didn't vote for the felon and those who now regret doing so, I can say we're sorry. But really I don't expect that to be procedurally worth much until we fix some process. :(
@kentpitman I certainly see your point.
But as a diverse group of smaller countries we accept that each coutry have their own peculiar processes and we don't really want to interfere with domestic politics.
So as long First Term Trump was mainly focused on domestic issues, we were quite happy just making a bit of fun if him.
Getting seriously about Greenland, looking suspiciously at Canada, and betraying Ukraine, that is where we can't stay silent.
