If you're thinking about how to manage your personal #opsec (operational security) under a fascist regime, you can do worse than to start out with @pluralistic 's Little Brother, as great today as the day it was written. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little

Do keep in mind that Marcus, while savvy, royally fucks up and winds up in a black site.

IMO, his biggest mistakes are:
1: He barely compartmentalizes his communications.
2: He expects non-technical users to implement pretty technical measures.
3: He only starts practicing any opsec after he has already drawn the attention of the authorities.
@pluralistic

@jozeldenrust fair. I didn't say "do exactly what Marcus does", to be fair to me. 😀

It's a good read anyway, though, IMO!

@tim

Oh yeah, my post wasn't meant to be a criticism of yours, just a supplement.

Little Brother is a decent starting point for anyone interested in opsec, but a naive reader might think Marcus is a good role model. At the same time, an overly cynical reader might think Marcus is an object lesson. But he's somewhere in the middle, and that's an interesting place to be.

It's interesting to see how an intelligent character fucks up, but even more salient is the point that, if you're practicing opsec, you're going to fuck up.

I guess I would suggest people read Little Brother, and if they want to read some more, they should read Attack Surface. Its protagonist, Masha, is better at opsec than Marcus is, but she's cynical about it.

I think there's a healthy and effective middle ground somewhere between these two protagonists.

@jozeldenrust @tim Definitely worth reading Attack Surface (I'm currently halfway through) to see Marcus's opsec torn apart by the other side
