Why are these ghastly magamorons so utterly hideous? 😢 😭 🥺</p><p><u><strong>Quote</strong></u></p><p>After cancelling nearly all NIH projects studying transgender health, Trump’s team instructs the US biomedical agency to study negative consequences of transitioning. </p><p>As the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) continues to defund nearly every research project on transgender health, the White House has directed the agency to focus on studying “regret” after a person transitions to align their body with their gender identity. Several NIH employees, who were granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press, confirmed the directive to Nature.</p><p>Two weeks ago, Matthew Memoli, who was acting NIH director at the time, sent an e-mail to the directors of several NIH institutes. It said that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is the NIH’s parent agency, “has been directed to fund research on a few specific areas” related to what it calls “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children and adults — a reference to gender-affirming care and surgery. “This is very important to the President and the Secretary” of the HHS, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the e-mail added.</p><p>Based on its priorities, the White House sometimes directs the NIH — the world’s largest public funder of biomedical science — to study certain broad topics, such as cancer or women’s health, but the latest directive’s specificity, inflammatory language and focus on a hyper-polarizing topic are unprecedented, the NIH employees say. Although the White House can sometimes “push us on various different things, we normally get to chart out the approach”, a staff member says.</p><p>Many scientists, reeling from the abrupt cancellation of more than US$180 million in NIH funding for research on transgender health, slammed the proposed studies as ideologically driven.</p><p>“It’s really pigeonholing trans people into this medical lens where the only thing important to know about them is that they seek medical transition” and regret it, says Harry Barbee, who studies the health of people from gender and sexual minorities (LGBT+) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, and identifies as non-binary and queer. “When ideology is prioritized over scientific merit, that threatens the entire scientific enterprise.”</p><p>The NIH and the White House did not respond to Nature’s queries about the new research priorities or scientists’ concerns with their apparent ideological bent. The HHS said that the “NIH is prioritizing research that serves the best interests of public health, not ideological agendas, and will continue to support studies that provide clear, objective data — particularly regarding the long-term effects of gender transitions.”</p><p>Estimates suggest that 1.6 million people in the United States identify as transgender, and about one-quarter of them obtain gender-affirming surgeries. Research suggests1 that access to these procedures can reduce anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation in transgender people.</p><p>US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office on 20 January that directed the US government to stop acknowledging that gender can differ from sex at birth. The cancellation of many trans-health research grants quickly followed, and now the agency seems to be shifting the type of research it funds. The e-mail from Memoli, obtained by Nature, specifies two areas of research that the Trump administration wishes to fund about “social transition”, which is when a person changes how they express their gender to others — for example, by changing their name or appearance.</p><p>These include “regret and detransition following social transition as well as chemical and surgical mutilation of children and adults” and “outcomes from children who have undergone social transition and/or chemical and surgical mutilation”, the e-mail says.</p><p>More research on the experience of trans people — including understanding reasons for dissatisfaction after transition — is direly needed, Barbee says. But they worry that the sole focus on negative consequences is misplaced: fewer than 1% of transgender people who undergo gender-affirming surgery regret it, according to an analysis published by Barbee and their colleagues2. By comparison, 14.4% of the broader population reports regret after any kind of surgery3.</p><p>So far, about 187 NIH grants funding trans-health research have been terminated, according to an online effort to track the Trump team’s research cuts by Brittany Charlton, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, who studies LGBT+ health, and her colleagues. "Reversibility" is only a factor if one chooses to stop. The vast majority of our tiny minority know that something is profoundly wrong, from an early age, i'm not talking teens, but say 5 - 7. Back in my childhood nothing was publicly known about this, there was no language for it, no way to have conversations, no references, no support etc. I knew "something" was very wrong, but unfortunately it took me many decades to discover what, why, & how to ameliorate it [albeit too late wrt all the major external physiological changes caused by that despised wrong hormone]. That's all ancient history & now largely irrelevant, coz today much is known of & about <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/GenderDysphoria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenderDysphoria</span></a>, so kids & their parents are easily able to identify & grasp not only what is going on, but what they can do about it. For the parents, & especially the kids, i can think of little that is more existentially devastating than to know they have safe effective options to stave off the evil wrong puberty until they are able to acquire their vital life-affirming surgeries later, with bodies not ruined by that otherwise flood of hated wrong hormones... but be prevented from doing so, by ignorant hating RWNJs & ChristoFascists. It’s daunting to sort fact from fiction in the Wild West world of online media, where hidden agendas and speculative opinion are rife. All the more so when a party’s policy only truly makes sense if viewed through a wider lens.</p><p>Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s promise to build seven small-scale nuclear reactors, ostensibly to help meet future energy needs while keeping carbon emissions at bay, therefore needs to be seen for what it really is: a staggeringly bad idea, a stunt and a con. It is a backdoor attempt to pander to the fossil-fuel lobby – and under the electoral spotlight, more people will figure that out.</p><p>Younger voters understandably won’t know that a generation their age once packed the Sidney Myer Music Bowl with Midnight Oil, INXS and other friends to “Stop the Drop”. They won’t remember our Nuclear Disarmament Party campaign, which won Senate seats in Western Australia and NSW in the ’80s. They can’t know what it was like to grow up during the Cold War era or live through horrific meltdowns at the Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants, which were also “completely safe” until the day that they weren’t. But generations Y and Z can still smell a rotten idea when they give it a good sniff.</p><p>At first blush, nuclear energy is causing less concern to younger voters, who haven’t yet taken a closer look. When they do, they will find that most experts and qualified observers view the proposal as expensive, difficult to implement, prone to significant uncertainty and full of rubbery figures.</p><p>One example is the fanciful assumption that nuclear plants could be built in 12 years. Twenty years would be more likely – if they are built at all. Cost overruns and safety issues are equally certain. And the carbon consequences of prolonging our old coal-fired power generators are dire.</p><p>This deceptive proposal has all the Trumpian hallmarks: a quasi policy announcement intended to serve sectional interests – in this case, fossil-fuel conglomerates – while simultaneously serving up a cartoon enemy as ideological whipping boy, namely renewable energy.</p><p>Australia has abundant sunlight, plenty of wind, plus lots of pumped hydro resources that can all be converted by increasingly efficient technologies. Stored batteries are ramping up, too. The butterfly has emerged from the chrysalis and taken to the skies – the renewable energy transition is well under way. Construction costs will keep coming down. Supply will keep going up. The future is already here.</p><p>By wrenching the country off this course, Dutton’s plan would leave old, dirty, coal-fired power stations staggering on at increasing risk of breakdown, putting off the day of reckoning when we finally stop polluting and heating our world and get on with using affordable, reliable energy that does not cause more climate chaos.</p><p>What possible reason is there for Australia to embark on building a completely new, expensive energy infrastructure we don’t need and which, incidentally, is already illegal in states where the reactors are meant to go?</p><p>Nuclear energy features eye-watering costs, which history repeatedly shows blow out. It features risks associated with managing radioactive waste for tens of thousands of years. It is also a massive safety risk from both accidents and attacks.</p><p>To cap the charade, this policy comes from the parties that supposedly champion free enterprise and want to reduce government spending, yet the hundreds of billions of dollars needed to fund the Coalition’s nuclear plan are to be borne by all of us, the taxpayer. Go figure!</p><p>The trend line is unarguable: renewable energy is cleaner, greener and getting cheaper every year. It will supersede fossil fuels in the blink of an evolutionary eye. Nuclear is a last-gasp delaying tactic.</p><p>Over 4 million Australian homes and businesses have solar panels on their roofs. South Australia routinely produces 75 per cent and sometimes up to 100 per cent of its power from renewables and is racing towards net zero, with the other states in hot pursuit. Most electricity added to global supply comes from clean energy.</p><p>When the Climate Change Authority, headed by former NSW Liberal government treasurer Matt Kean, released a report showing Dutton’s policy would result in a 2 billion-tonne blowout in dirty emissions, the Coalition’s response was to play the man and not the ball, and threaten Kean.</p><p>When a group of eminent former defence chiefs raised the spectre of nuclear plants scattered across the country vulnerable to the risk of terrorism and accidents, the Coalition response was virtual silence.</p><p>When farmers, scientists and community groups questioned the impact on precious groundwater of thirsty nuclear reactors running 24/7, the Coalition response was a shrug.</p><p>Compare this with Dutton’s proud promise that if elected, within 50 days he would approve the massive Browse Basin gas development in WA.</p><p>Due to its size, the Browse project is known as a “carbon bomb”, given it will release more than 4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and blow Australia’s modest greenhouse emissions targets to smithereens.</p><p>In these circumstances, the Coalition promise of boosting fossil fuels with “boutique” nuclear reactors coming on stream at some mythical future date to satisfy energy needs and reduce costs is an utter chimera.</p><p>It is best understood as a delaying tactic, an Aussie version of US President Donald Trump’s “drill baby drill”, buying more time for multinational carbon producers to keep making super profits and heating the planet at our expense.</p><p>And there is another effect of the policy: it buttresses claims that Australia should become a site for the storage of large quantities of radioactive nuclear waste generated by other countries.</p><p>Periodically, there are calls for Australia’s outback, with its stable geology and low population density, to be the site for disposal of the world’s radioactive waste. It’s an idea that has been rejected before, but don’t expect it to go away soon.</p><p>Recently, a senior US official chided Australia for not being sufficiently enthusiastic about uranium mining. In the transactional Trumpworld we now inhabit, new AI facilities envisaged by Amazon, Meta, Google and the like are expected to draw vast amounts of power, often touted as coming from nuclear.</p><p>Given the US still doesn’t have a licensed, permanent nuclear waste site after 50 years of furious debate and unsuccessful political negotiation, storage and disposal of new streams of radioactive waste will be crucial.</p><p>If the US president can posit buying Greenland and incorporating Canada as the 51st state, impose tariffs on America’s trading partners at will, and promise to end the war in Ukraine in a day, who is to say earmarking Australia as an international nuclear waste dump is a fanciful scenario? Can anyone imagine “Temu Trump” saying no?</p><p>As for polls showing younger Australians are less concerned about nuclear energy … not so fast. Droppie [infosec] 🐨:archlinux: :kde: :firefox_nightly: :thunderbird: :vegan:<p><a href="https://www.crikey.com.au/2025/03/12/carbon-credits-australia-human-induced-regeneration-accus/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">crikey.com.au/2025/03/12/carbo</span><span class="invisible">n-credits-australia-human-induced-regeneration-accus/</span></a></p><p><strong>QUOTE BEGINS</strong></p><p>With the corporate sector increasingly sceptical of Australia’s carbon credit system and rumours that the government’s Climate Active voluntary credits scheme will be shut down, in February the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) — the body charged with overseeing Australia’s carbon credit system, issued a remarkable paper.</p><p>Designed to provide assurance that carbon credits based on “human-induced regeneration” (HIR) carbon sequestration projects — which are crucial to Labor’s underwhelming climate action policies — were credible, it purported to show how “projects registered under the HIR method earn carbon credits based on the sequestration of carbon in native vegetation. It provides an overview of the robust framework for large-scale sequestration throughout Australia”.</p><p>As we know from a wide range of scientists and experts in the administration of HIR schemes, the framework is anything but robust. In fact, it is almost entirely at odds with the basic science of vegetation regeneration.</p><p>The arguments made in the paper, which have been scrutinised by Andrew Macintosh, Megan Evans, Don Butler, Marie Waschka and Dean Ansell of ANU and UNSW, raise concerns that the Clean Energy Regulator — which has a history of attacking scientists who question its claims — continues to ignore science in favour of propping up a scheme crucial to Labor’s efforts to pretend it is serious about climate action.</p><p>In particular, the CER continues to push the claim that forms the illusory basis of around 95% of HIR projects — that stopping animals grazing on land allows plants to regenerate into woody vegetation, thereby storing carbon. The scientific consensus is that this is simply not true — it is the amount of rainfall that determines regrowth, not ceasing grazing. That means that the great majority of HIR projects are simply never going to do what their owners are being paid for, and the resulting Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) are worthless in terms of stored carbon.</p><p>As Crikey detailed in 2023, the CER has fought a bitter battle against the science — including misrepresenting experts as backing the CER’s view. In documents released under freedom of information laws, we know that the CSIRO told Labor’s Chubb review of the integrity of ACCUs that “there is at present no clear evidence that changes in management of total grazing pressure will consistently result in an increase in carbon stocks in woody biomass across all regions of Australia’s rangelands”, before the CER demanded the document be edited.</p><p>As Macintosh and his colleagues note, the CER has since modified its position slightly but still defies science. In its February tract, it says “although many factors affect regeneration, the most important factor in sustaining the growth of vegetation following rainfall events is the nature, extent, intensity and duration of activities that suppress the growth of native vegetation”.</p><p>This is demonstrably false. As the Wentworth Group of Scientists told Chubb:</p><blockquote><p>Most HIR projects have, however, been directed to arid and semi-arid regions where vegetation has never been cleared. In these boom or bust systems, rainfall is the key driver of vegetation change, and drives both increases and decreases in biomass. While reducing grazing pressure can result in increased tree and shrub cover in these landscapes, from a carbon sequestration perspective this effect is small relative to cyclical climatic drivers.</p></blockquote><p>But the CER continues to reject the science. In its February paper, it claims “a 2021 analysis by Beare and Chambers found strong evidence that established HIR projects have resulted in significant increases in vegetation when compared with a business-as-usual scenario in a study of projects in New South Wales and Queensland.”</p><p>But what did the Beare and Chambers analysis, which examined 72 HIR projects in NSW and 51 in Queensland, actually show? It revealed a statistically significant increase in cover compared to control areas, but the actual increase itself was small, well below the levels for which the projects have been credited — and in nearly a quarter of projects there was no change, or vegetation actually reduced.</p><p>Moreover, the analysis relied on a dataset that the CER had itself previously dismissed as too inaccurate to assess projects, when Macintosh and co used the same dataset to show minimal increase in tree cover. There’s a similar inconsistency in the CER’s citation in the paper of a report by Dr Chris Brack as evidence that HIR works, when it too relies on satellite imagery-based data which the CER dismisses when it is used by critics.</p><p>The CER tries to resolve this contradiction in the latest paper by claiming “national-scale data sets may be useful to monitor the performance of the whole portfolio of projects once it matures to forest”. Presumably only if the CER likes the results.</p><p>Further evidence has emerged about the failure of HIR over the last year. A review by the ANU/UNSW experts assessed 116 HIR projects that had been established before 2017, which should have had substantial regeneration of woody vegetation by now. The study revealed the great majority of projects were not even compliant with the baseline requirements for generating carbon credits, such as having previously been comprehensively cleared, or with progressive requirements relating to revegetation.</p><p>And given the length of time after project registration, well over half of the projects should have had near-100% forest cover, but in reality only a small number had anything like the cover suggested by the amount of sequestration for which the projects had been credited. And changes in vegetation were heavily responsive to climatic events such as El Ninos and La Ninas.</p><p>The study concludes:</p><blockquote><p>While some projects appear to have had a positive additional effect on canopy cover, even for these projects, the effects are small relative to the levels of credited sequestration and there is limited evidence of material regeneration. At the aggregate level, across all projects in the sample, the data suggest the projects have had only a small effect on canopy cover, with most of the change being attributable to seasonal variability in rainfall.</p></blockquote><p>That is, the observed results are consistent with what the science has told us to expect: HIR works only at the margins.
