George Ellenburg (he/him/his)<p>On August 23rd the <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Outlook" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Outlook</a> app for <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Android" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Android</a> stopped working on my phone (<a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Pixel8Pro" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Pixel8Pro</a>). No new <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/mail" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#mail</a><span> would be received, and I couldn't figure out how or why.<br><br></span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/K9" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#K9</a> (and later <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Thunderbird" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Thunderbird</a><span>) worked just fine on my phone and could receive mail perfectly.<br><br>I liked Outlook because my </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/calendar" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#calendar</a> was right there in the same app as my <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Email" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Email</a><span>.<br><br>Well, I found out what happened.<br><br></span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Microsoft" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Microsoft</a> surreptitiously migrated the <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/IMAP" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#IMAP</a> account I had configured on Outlook over to an <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Exchange" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Exchange</a><span> account stored on Microsoft's servers.<br><br>Microsoft literally, without my authorization or knowledge copied all my mail from my device and my credentials up to their servers so their </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Exchange" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Exchange</a><span> servers could (attempt to) get my mail and store it on their servers.<br><br>I am beyond pissed and I am beyond livid. <br><br>This is </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/ClassAction" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ClassAction</a> level type bullshit but there's probably some <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/ForcedArbitration" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ForcedArbitration</a> clause I agreed to when I upgraded to <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/24H2" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#24H2</a><span> or something.<br><br>God damn fucking Microsoft.<br><br>And they are pulling this same shit with the new </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/PWA" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#PWA</a> <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Windows11" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Windows11</a><span> Mail app they're shoving down everyone's throats on Windows 11, too.<br><br>The scary thing is, from both a </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/privacy" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#privacy</a> and <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/legal" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#legal</a> standpoint, is that this now makes Microsoft the <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/custodian" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#custodian</a> of your Email. Which means Microsoft could receive a <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/subpoena" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#subpoena</a><span> for your Email and you won't even know about it to challenge the subpoena's legality.<br><br></span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/E-discovery" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#E-discovery</a><span> just got a whole lot easier and nicer for lawyers and the DOJ.<br><br>Fucking bullshit.<br><br>If it weren't for the fact that some of the apps I use on a daily basis require Windows I'd dump this shit like a hot potato and go back to using </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/FreeBSD" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a><span>.<br><br>I miss FreeBSD.<br><br>God I miss FreeBSD.<br><br></span><del>(No I'm not switching any time soon. I can't, and I'm not going to debate the merits of either Linux or FreeBSD with anyone. Of course I can use Wine. But Wine isn't fully compatible with this one particular software package I've been using for the past 20 years.)</del><span><br><br>Update: Maybe I might be able to switch. But unfortunately not to FreeBSD. Researching. Will probably go with </span><a href="https://bofh.social/tags/LinuxMint" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LinuxMint</a>. I like <a href="https://bofh.social/tags/Pop_OS" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Pop_OS</a> but I don't like the fact that it wastes so much screen real-estate. But that's on my laptop. I have a much bigger monitor on my desk. Thinking.....</p>
