Oh no the city’s under attack

Looking from a boat in at the waterfront skyline of Aarhus Ø, the mixed-use mid-city neighbourhood with dramatic modern buildings in an eclectic mix of low-rise and high-rise styles iin different angular shapes. A deep orange sun is setting behind the buildings, so they are almost in silhouette. The sunset has turned the sea into luscious blacks and blues and oranges. We are looking through railings which frame the scene as if we are watching, unseen, through a window. A spider is spinning a web between the railings. From this perspective, it looks as if the spider is disproportionately huge and is suspended in the sky over the city, curled, tensed. The strands of the web look as if they are being woven from the top of the tall skyscraper on the right edge and will eventually trap the whole city. An odd mix - the beautiful sunset and colours, then the illusion of almost comical attack by an itty-bitty spider.

Oh no the city's under attack

Close-up, looking at part of the metal mechanisms of a gigantic harbour lifting platform. The metal is grey-green and this section is like a spoked wheel on railings. Through it, we can see the harbour water and across it, the library with its giant playground bear and mid-city buildings including the cathedral with its spire and the old customs house with its turrets. Someone has stuck a bright pink toy soldier on to the railing of the spoked wheel, fixed on a bed of white gum. The wee soldier has a wee gun and a wee ammunitions belt and a wee bayonet and is in an attack stance, pointing the gun at the customs house. From this perspective, it looks as if the soldier is about to spring out from behind the railings and charge in an attack on the city’s defences. I have no idea why someone put a toy soldier here, or why the soldier is pink, but it made me smile to see them. It was like I’d wandered into somebody else’s short story.

Even aside from the environmental expense and the financial expense of driving a car, people who drive everywhere must miss out on so much. Another joy of living in a walkable, bikeable city – you're constantly falling across the most random stuff that adds delight to the day. Stuff you’d never see from a car.

Taken very close up and from a very low angle, we are looking up along a short, narrow, old, picturesque, gently sloping cobbled sidestreet that leads up to Aarhus Domkirke. The street is empty. Up ahead, framed at the end of the street, we can see part of the redbrick cathedral with its distinctive green copper roof and spires. Right in front of us, almost level with the eye because of angle, there is a single hole in the street where one cobblestone is missing. Someone has planted two hydrangea blooms in it. Their deep blue-purple colour is a fabulous splash in the muted browns and greys of the street. A lovely and surprising way of warning others not to trip on the hole, which would otherwise be barely visible to anyone walking or cycling here.

@CiaraNi great photo I bike to work and enjoy it most of the time - especially after i recently got my first new bike in 20 years. A lot of my colleagues get to work by car. Most of them would ditch the car instantly if the alternative was doable. I acknowledge the privilege it is to have biking be a real option.

@fideldonson Tak! And yes, it is a privilege here in Denmark that we have bike infrastructure and efficient public transport and walkable cities.
