When Big Tech is challenged on its energy, material and water use, it's response is always that its working on being more efficient, finding ways to keep growing but in a "greener" way.

We must challenge the Growth Death Cult.

Our environment simply cannot cope with this incessant growth of data, data centers, servers, chips, smartphones, laptops, earbuds.

There is no infinite growth on a finite planet. Driven by Big Tech, we have already bust past multiple boundaries.

It's not sustainable.

@gerrymcgovern It cannot be said often and clearly enough. There is no such thing as green overconsumption. we don't need a greener way, we need another way. we don't need more green stuff. we need less stuff.

@nic @gerrymcgovern
We also need the stuff we do get to be designed to last and be repaired easily

@AutisticMumTo3
yes, I wrote about that yesterday (in German though). In France, the repairability of a device has to be shown on the package. One small step in the right direction...

@nic @gerrymcgovern
All too often with mobiles it's become you can't even easily replace the battery never mind anything else.

@nic @gerrymcgovern
I am aware others have spoken/written about this. Without this we are forced to buy new stuff more often than we otherwise would. More consumption than necessary.

@gerrymcgovern Yes.
We'll have an uphill battle, however, until US econ textbooks reflect this fact.

@gerrymcgovern @Hellybootwader
Even if there was, increased efficiency can actually lead to producing more things, increasing the total resources used compared to the previous process.

@gerrymcgovern

Cancer is only trying to be more efficient when it metastasizes, really.

@gerrymcgovern The forces of capitalism would rather let the world end, and everyone die. Why do you think the billionaires are all building doomsday bunkers?
