269,000 longterm empty homes in England and yet we need to build more

@Beedazzled Our local council has made use of the rules put in place some time ago to seize 8 large houses in the city where no repairs had been done, no-one lived there, no council tax had been paid (property empty) and no responses given re court orders. I understand that all councils have this power but few seem to be using it. The houses will be made into social housing.

We need a lot more of this in Toronto too.
@Beedazzled I have a bit of involvement with empty homes. Unfortunately a huge number of these are locked in probate. I think that after a decent time - say a year - these should be compulsorily liquidated and the property sold.
An equally huge number are empty because the householder is in long-term care or prison which is a little more thorny to deal with, but if we can get the probate properties and various others back that would be a huge benefit.
@Beedazzled There are similar issues here though I don’t know how many in total. Only 1 block from me I know of 2 vacant homes. There should a moral obligation to deal with this. People hoarding homes and keeping them empty is wrong imo. It doesn’t make any sense
