As there is nothing we in UK can do to affect the outcome, and as polls are unreliable, may be sensible to avoid looking at US news until the election.
@davidallengreen Would that it were so simple.
@davidallengreen I have a (by now pretty long) list of mute words in a Mastodon "USpol" filter, as it's incredibly stressful to see all the terrible news scrolling past when, as you say, there is literally nothing I can do to affect the outcome.
As an American I'm trying to follow this plan. Aided by a judicious application of edibles.
@davidallengreen American in Europe. I'm only paying attention to the local election information for city and state where I'm eligible to vote. Anything more would require medicinal intervention.
@davidallengreen I completely agree that it would be sensible.
And yet…
This is true of most things in life. The ideal is to engage analytically without getting swept away by waves of dread. Though ideals are, as always, difficult...
I can see why one wants to avoid the appeals for money or the calls to go out and vote. But there's so much interesting analysis too!
I post little on the subject, but I am eager to read about it. Trying to make sense of these hard-to-comprehend developments.
There are many things that I can't influence that I still like to read about, because they are beautiful (a comet passing) or impactful (a storm passing) or intriguing (a strange event in some remote village, perhaps).
Could start digging a bunker....
@davidallengreen I've recently deleted Reddit off of my phone for this reason. I couldn't avoid getting drawn into all the doom
@davidallengreen I think the phrase I'm looking for is 'rubbernecking'.
Although with the added joy that if the crash is really bad, the resulting explosion might reach me.
@davidallengreen good advice. I’ve muted every mention of the T word on here and my US friends are considerate enough to put content warnings on their politics posts. As you used to say - brace, brace!
@davidallengreen Listening to music and reading novels and poetry for the next week and a half ….
@davidallengreen indeed.
We're about to have our own election over here in Ireland, not that you would think it from the scres of newsprint devoted to the Fascist Pumpkin.
@davidallengreen
... and miss all the fun?
