How Trump used emergency legislation for his tariffs policy
The constitution provides that it is for Congress and not the president to set the terms of trade

@davidallengreen Many, many, instances of laws being put into place where no-one has cared if a bad actor could abuse them. "Trust us bro" should not be the only safety measure used to stop laws being abused.
@andrewdaviesuk @davidallengreen There is a quote from WB Yeats that comes often to mind:
"In legislation intention is nothing, and the letter of the law everything, and no Government has the right, whether to flatter fanatics or in mere vagueness of mind, to forge an instrument of tyranny and say that it will never be used."
If only his warning was more widely taken to heart.
@andrewdaviesuk @davidallengreen Every drafting committee REALLY needs an official Devil's Advocate. Preferably paid a bonus for successful adversarial attacks that force a rethink/rewrite.
@andrewdaviesuk @davidallengreen "The law quite clearly states which faces the leopards are allowed to eat!", I splutter as the big cat approaches...
Should the country survive the current presidential term and elect a non-republican president next, it'll be interesting to see how swiftly and strongly the arguments against these powers are mounted by the same people currently nodding along.
