We had a proper new turntable last year that rekindled our love for .

So - over the next few weeks - I'm revisiting my vinyl purchases from last year.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 1/12

: 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic' by King Crimson (1973 - 2013 Steve Wilson Remaster).

In turns scary, bucolic, aggressive, soft and just plain weird, this really pushes the boundaries of what 'popular music' can be.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 2/12

: 'Selling England by the Pound' by Genesis (1973 - 2008 Nick Davis Remaster).

A stunning record - and still my favourite album of all time - this displays their musicianship, humour and story-telling. A listen that takes you on a journey.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 3/12

: 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk (1974 - 2009 Remaster).

Electronic atmospheres really conjure a drive on a rural motorway. This is nothing less than a gorgeous tone poem.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 4/12

: 'Too-Rye-Ay' by Dexys Midnight Runners (1982 - 'As it should have sounded' 2022 Remaster).

A great blend of soul, pop, New Wave and folk. Owned this at release but lost it in the intervening 40 years. I can now appreciate what a great album this is.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 5/12

: 'Leaders of the Free World' by Elbow (2005 - 2021 Remaster).

'One Day Like This' blah blah blah. Elbow were making great cerebral and idiosyncratic music before they made a song that the nation liked. Look no further than this gorgeously constructed album. If 'Great Expectations' doesn't send shivers down your spine, nothing will *.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 6/12

: 'Modern Life is Rubbish' by Blur (1993 - 2023 Orange Vinyl Record Day Remaster).

This is still such an incredible album. For a few years in the 1990s I was accidentally fashionable and I'm so glad I was accidentally fashionable to this. Beautifully flamboyant, clinically produced, and just - well - a lot of fun.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 7/12

: 'Tango in the Night' by Fleetwood Mac (1987 - 2017 remaster).

Another album I owned from release and that went missing at some point after.

It's a strong pop effort and, for me, is up there with 'Rumours'.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 8/12

: 'Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake' by Small Faces (1968 - 2018 remaster).

A wonderful record spanning some great pop, psychedelia and concept rock. And the peerless Stanley Unwin.

'Are you all sitty comftybold two square on your botty? Then I'll begin...'

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 9/12

: 'Third' by Soft Machine (1970 - 2011 remaster).

Great jazz fusion from one time psychedelics. Four sides - four songs. 'Slightly All the Time' is just gorgeous.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 10/12

: 'Limits of Language' by Field Music (2024).

Latest great album from these consistently creative guys. More electronic than previous efforts with a gorgeous fat drum sound.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 11/12

: 'Field Music (Measure)' by Field Music (2009 - 2019 yellow and red vinyl).

Another one by this band and - for me - their definitive album. Wondrous music across two records. These guys can do more in three minutes than some bands manage on one side of vinyl.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 12/12

: ' In the Land of Grey and Pink' by Caravan (1971 - 2002 remaster).

A jaunty journey through the minds of some early 70s Canterbury Scene musos. Some 'pipeweed' may have been smoked and much fun was had.

2024 Vinyl Purchase Revisit 13/12 (!)

: 'Octopus' by Gentle Giant (1972 - 2015 Steve Wilson remaster).

Yes, I know! Not a purchase last year, but my first vinyl acquisition in almost 30 years back in 2022 when I got this for my 50th birthday. This album was 50 years old then and Pompey-made - just like me.

A great album that shows prog can involve short, sharp songs...
