Just a quick note on racism: most racism is not conscious. Hardly anyone is like: yes i am a racist but i don’t care - because i am a racist -hah!

No. Most people think they are the good ones, that they are not racists. They don’t realise that many of the views and opinions they hold, the way they engage with media, are deeply racist. That is what racism is!

You need to learn this and you need to keep, keep working on yourself, keep being willing to listen and learn.

Ok i have had a lot of responses saying i am wrong; there are a lot of conscious, wilful racists. Yes, of course there are. I just meant that that’s who we think of when we think of racism; and there are quite a few of those. But there are even more people who don’t even think of themselves at racist, but who also are. In other words: my real point was the second half of the post; I wasn’t actually trying to say anything much about the first category.

To put ot differentlly: it’s easy to look at the AfD, Le Pen, BNP or whatever and say: look at those evil racists! Yes, they are. But that doesn’t make ourselves the good guys! We need to recognise how racism is really baked into everything, our whole system, and is very much part of “nice”centrists world views too. That’s all. And the post was a subtoot commenting on lovely (racist) responses to another post.

@pvonhellermannn I wonder if there are two types: wilful and unconscious.

@nitin yes, you are right. Just now, i was just fed up with the kinds of righteous people you encounter here and elsewhere, who lecture you etc, and who have no idea how racist their takes are.

Yeah, sure… "Hardly anyone"… Pretty much any right-wing assholes¹ on "social networks" advertising platform, on mass media, TV, radio, written press, and a shitload of politicians all over the world, a shitload of genocidal war-mongers supporters, as well as the super rich assholes. But yeah "Hardly anyone"

1. Which include people who promote right wing ideology and claim to be leftist

@pvonhellermannn Those of us who are white and who've grown up in the West have been indoctrinated from kindergarten up with ideas that we are, as a group, above everyone else in the world. This group thinking makes it part of a feel-good thing that is very hard to counter. It's more or less a full time job to become an anti-racist. Well yes it it possible. But it takes a serious lot of both soul searching and reality checking.

@pvonhellermannn
the unconscious racism you point out is important as while it is under the surface it can be summoned easily by the populist willful racist; I learnt something challenging my "liberal view" of Taiwan recently: the reason factions of Taiwanese Austronesian show more affinity to China than Taiwanese Han (I am Taiwanese Han) is a reaction to 400 years of exploitation by Taiwanese Han: essentially they have no quarrel with Chinese Han but plenty resentment toward Taiwanese Han!

@kofanchen that’s so interesting, and a really good example. Thank you for sharing this!
