Of course I am truly happy for the 4 hostages and their families to be reunited today. But I cannot stand Western media and leaders celebrating this today without even mentioning that 200 Palestinians were killed during the rescue and that IDF soldiers - as I understand it - came hidden on humanitarian aid trucks, using the humanitarian pier. And that none of this would have been necessary if Israel had accepted any of the ceasefire deals 1/2 mastodon.green/@pvonhellermann

2/2 Also, as Alon Mizrahi points out, this is very very bad news for the remaining hostsges, as Israel has made it patently clear that it is not interested in any further exchanges or agreements. This makes the remaining hostages worthless for Hamas and endangers them hugely.

@pvonhellermannn So may Hamas should do the right and politically smart thing and just release them. I'm not talking about a fancy hand-over, just dump them out to let them see for themselves what Israel has done to Gaza. Their stories, at that point, will be more valuable than their bodies.

@janisf @pvonhellermannn
No, but actually...
Just dump them out like shitty people do with a litter of kittens? Like, "Here you go, figure it out. If you wind up in the sea you're going the wrong way."

@TheGreatLlama @pvonhellermannn

There are political realities, so considering it's Hamas, It's that or make a video of beheading them... so, yeah.

Sorry.

@janisf @pvonhellermannn
You should probably get a better sense of whether someone is agreeing with you before you go on the assault.

@TheGreatLlama @pvonhellermannn So, yeah. What might just be realistic for Hamas, and still spare the lives of the hostages.

@TheGreatLlama @pvonhellermannn News would get out. They'd get picked up by the IDF in short order if their own troops were properly informed and controlled.

@janisf @pvonhellermannn In the geographic centre of Gaza. In the basement of one of the hospitals.

@jbond @pvonhellermannn I dunno. Somewhere strategic. What too many folks don't realize it's that there's a reason they call it "the theater." At the end of the IRL show, you just need the right people to be convinced you're the hero.

@pvonhellermannn does it mean less interest for Hamas to kidnap hostages in the future?

@Ck @pvonhellermannn Even if it does, I'm not sure if "we're going to endanger current hostages' lives to prevent more hostage takings" is a morally good position.

@art_codesmith @pvonhellermannn Israel already tried the other way, several times. Both with hizbollah and Hamas. Look for example in the case with Gilad Shalit, the terrorists who were held in the prisons and were released, immediately started a new bigger wave of killing Israelis. Even Sinwar himself (who started the current war) was released as part of the deal for previously kidnapping Israelis. So accepting the Hamas demands again will only lead to more dead

@pvonhellermannn I thought that is real already said as much by carpetbombing everyplace they could be being held. FFS.

@pvonhellermannn none of it would be necessary if **Israel**..????

Wow, the incredible bias is just amazing

Hamas killed those people, by placing the kidnapped people in a busy market area

Israel cannot allow the human shield strategy to prevent military action, 100% of the responsibility is on the terrorists

Today was great news

@EyalL @pvonhellermannn

I would want your children to live, even if a war criminal was hiding behind them. I would not kill your children for that.

@RnDanger @pvonhellermannn

And yet I wouldn't tell anyone to sacrifice their own to save human shields used by terrorists

@EyalL @RnDanger @pvonhellermannn when you say ‘human shields’ it sounds like you don’t think they’re people.

@CatDragon @RnDanger @pvonhellermannn you can read whatever you want in what I say but what I say is clear

When terrorists kidnap and murder us and then hide behind their civilians, I won't surrender to their terms, even if it means risking their civilians

I care more about my people, I won't sacrifice them to avoid risking the civilians that let Hamas rule over them

@EyalL

So you agree it was justifiable to kill IDF's human shields to rescue the many thousand of men, women and children being held hostage by Israel?

@CatDragon @RnDanger @pvonhellermannn

@jeremy_pm @CatDragon @RnDanger @pvonhellermannn nobody is held hostage in Israel

Israel mostly holds convicted prisoners in jail, who committed crimes

And no, Israel doesn't hold them in civilian homes

@EyalL

So this is wrong?

In April 2022, there were 4,450 Palestinian security prisoners in Israeli prisons – including 160 children, 32 women, and over 1,000 "administrative detainees" (indefinitely incarcerated without charge).

@CatDragon @RnDanger @pvonhellermannn

@jeremy_pm

Nobody is taken "hostage" they are all in custody before during or after court proceedings for violence.

@jeremy_pm

Except it's pretty accurate.

The vast majority are eventually convicted in a court of law

The attempt to create a symmetry with civilian hostages taken in the cruelest of attacks is not amusing, it's even disgusting

@EyalL A court of law? Please enough with the jesting.

@jeremy_pm do you believe courts run by Jews aren't courts of law?

The vast majority are convicts or undergoing trial for violence

@EyalL

What has the possible religion of a judge got to do with the injustice of thousands of foreign citizens being held hostage without charge by the Israeli military?

@EyalL @pvonhellermannn

The people who pulled the triggers on the weapons that killed those people, killed those people.

@EyalL @pvonhellermannn

There were no wires tied around their arms or fingers like fucking puppet strings. They pulled the trigger, THEY KILLED THOSE PEOPLE.

The least they could do is take responsibility for their choices and actions. They can blame Hamas for factors they weighed in making that decision, they could call it regrettable or whatever etc etc, but they can't just utterly DUMP responsibility as if they have no agency when they're the ones with their fingers on the actual triggers. The person who takes the shot and kills another human being is the person with the power in that moment, NOT some hapless victim.

THIS issue right here is exactly the type of logic that tells me Israel's military has its morals completely and dangerously twisted.

The fact that you would even try to make this type of claim in the first place tells me something is very, very wrong with how your understanding of these situations works.

@pvonhellermannn That's more or less what I suspected when I heard about the release but I couldn't find any information.

First thought at every seemingly good news from "Israel": How many Palestinian lives does this cost?

@Syphilia @pvonhellermannn what military action would be morally acceptable to rescue hostages, then?

This goes hand in hand with considering what military action would be morally acceptable following the #AlAqsaFlood operation.

To play #armchairquarterback is fine -- but at least provide some alternate course of military action.

@nicholas_saunders Hostage exchange is the normal and of course morally acceptable way to do it.

"Israel" doesn't want that. They need to feel they are in power in a very asymmetrical way.
@pvonhellermannn

@Syphilia @pvonhellermannn are they allowed to decline the generous offers of Hamas, or would you compel a deal?

@nicholas_saunders Get over it. The Israeli regime is a thousand times worse than Hamas would ever manage to get.
@pvonhellermannn

@Syphilia @pvonhellermannn so dismantle the state would seem to be your solution, with no military action allowed in response to #AlAqsaFlood operations.

@pvonhellermannn I don't see it mentioned here so I'll just say it: hiding soldiers in humanitarian aid trucks is perfidy and explicitly a war crime.

@crapaud @pvonhellermannn that's what I thought, I've been asking about this too.

@pvonhellermannn Is this proven info? Because I don't see any proof from the Twitter account you posted.

@pvonhellermannn

This disproportional killing spree needs to stop right now.
A truce and a 2 state solution ASAP….

@pvonhellermannn Some of my Jewish friends are still adamant that the far right is only a fringe in Israeli politics.

(Even if some of Netanyahu’s cabinet ministers used to belong to a political group convicted for terrorism.)

But stop right here:

There were hundreds of soldiers involved in this operation. They have families and normal lives.

Yet, they would cold-bloodedly impersonate relief workers and open fire on a hungry crowd.

Capability for that alone makes you in my books.
