What happened to Blue Exorcist Season 1?

I own the first 10 volumes of this story and was very surprised when the anime did jump back in time by the end of the season.
I’m very confused. Whether you have read the manga or not, you should also be confused.

I had forgotten how good the first episodes are. Good animation, great world building... Also the main character is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto

Blue Exorcist - Volume 6
Picking this up after a while, and not many thoughts.
There was way too much politics in this one. Many new characters to keep track and complicated backstories, with a double-crossing and family drama.
On to the next!
It still feels surreal to me that we've gotten two cours of Blue Exorcist this year, and there hasn't been a seven year gap.

Ending September and going into October with the third match of the Quarterfinals as Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen squares off against Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist for a trip to the semifinals and going toe-to-toe against Jolyne Cujoh. Who will win? You decide! Vote today!

The roles have reversed in this week's match in Groups A and B with Revy (now eliminated from playoff contention) and Mikasa Ackerman looking for their first win of the season. And Rin Okumura and Son Gohan fighting for the top spot in the standings as both are expected to clinch a playoff spot.
